Nathaly Segovia received her PhD in Bioengineering at University Ramón Llul of Barcelona in October 2014, for her work based on the development of non-viral vectors for efficient nucleic acid delivery. Besides, during her PhD research, she enjoyed a doctoral stay at the Edelmanlab, in the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since February 2015 she obtained a postdoctoral fellow in the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), where she is involved on applied research projects in collaboration with chemical and pharmaceutical companies.
Her research interest integrates chemistry, material science, and biology in order to develop new smart biomaterial for drug delivery systems of both pharmaceuticlas (such as anticancer drugs) and biopharmaceuticals (such as genes, siRNA,proteins, cells), besides both in vitro and in vivo evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the new drug delivery systems. Her background in the field of biomaterials, polymer synthesis, organic chemistry, gene therapy, cell culture, and molecular biology allow her to have a comprehensive understanding of how materials behave and interact with tissues or cells, and thus allowing the designee of smart biomaterials with the required functionalities. Her main objective relies on the development of smart biomaterials for drug delivery systems in order to allow a control release of the drug in an efficient and safety manner in the target tissue or cell.
