I was graduated in Physics at the University of Barcelona (UB) and obtained his PhD in Physics at the same university in the Department of Fundamental Physics, under the supervision of Prof. Joan Angel Padró. The PhD thesis was focused on studying molecular collective motions in liquids using molecular dynamics simulations. During the same period, I was also part-time working in the Nanometric Techniques Unit at the Scientific-Technical Services of the UB. The unit was dedicated to provide services in Scanning Probe Microscopies (SPM) to research groups. Working as a technician I obtained extensive experience on SPM applied to physics, chemistry, biology and material science studies in both air and liquid environment.  After the doctoral thesis, I was hired as head of the Unit of Nanometric Techniques for two years. In 2003, to increase my knowledge on both SPM techniques and the liquid state I moved to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, USA, thanks to a Fullbright postdoctoral fellowship under the supervision of Prof. M. Salmerón. During this time I focused my research on the study of the liquid-solid interface at the nanoscale using AFM and Ambient-Pressure X-ray Photolectron Spectroscopy (AP-XPS) at the ALS synchrotron, located in the same National Laboratory.  Those have been my main research lines until today. I returned to Spain through a Ramón y Cajal contract at the Institut Català de Nanotecnologia (ICN, now ICN2) in the Force Probe Miscrocopy & Surface Nanoenginnering group, at the time of its foundation, under the direction of Dr. Jordi Fraxedas. In ICN2 I set up two laboratories with two different research lines one line dedicated to the development of new modes of operation of AFM to study wetting and the liquid-solid interface at the nanoscale and another line, dedicated to the study of the interaction of water with surfaces and the design of different approaches to control the structure of water at the solid interface and heterogeneous nucleation of ice. In 2016, as a CSIC Tenured Scientist he moved to the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), joining this Group of Physical Chemistry of Surfaces and Interfaces lead by Prof. Carmen Ocal. Continuing my previous research interests I’m now centered in three main search lines: I) Development of new SPM modes based in multifrequency dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) identification of chemical groups and study wetting and ice nucleation at the nanoscale. II) Study of the interaction of water with ferroelectric surfaces and its role in surface charge screening using SPM and AP-XPS techniques. III) Study of ice nucleation on surfaces focusing on the effect of surfaces on heterogeneous nucleation and ice growth at ambient conditions.
