ICMAB offers a course on "Essential Documentation Tools" for young researchers

Aiming at developing internal talent and meeting the needs of ICMAB's young scientists, ICMAB's Communication & Outreach and Library & Documentation services offer from January to May 2018 a course of 15 hours (divided in 5 modules of 3 hours each) on documentation and writing tools necessary for research: "Essential documentation tools for research - Practical guide for young ICMAB researchers".

Highschool students from Institut Castellbisbal visit ICMAB

On 19 January 2018 we received the visit of a group of highschool students from Institut Castellbisbal. The students listened first to our Communication and Outreach Officer, who welcomed them and explained them where they were and the work we do at ICMAB, and then to a seminar on "The materials of the future for nanomedicine" given by Dr. Judith Guasch, from the NANOMOL group. The seminar was followed by a visit to four of our laboratories: X-ray diffraction, AFM, SoftLab and the lab of Dr. Judith Guasch.

Sant Feliu G., 12-14 MAR: COST TO-BE Spring Meeting "Towards Oxide Electronics" organized by ICMAB

The COST TO-BE Spring Meeting 2018 will be organized by the ICMAB and will be held in Hotel Eden Roc, Sant Feliu, Spain 12-14th March 2018. The meeting, which will be the last one of the series organised by the TO-BE consortium, will be the stage for the presentation of the contents of the Roadmap "Towards oxide electronics" prepared within the context of TO-BE Cost Action.

Valencia, 24-26 JAN 2018: Getting ready for the X edition of the GEFES meeting

The X edition of the GEFES meeting will take place in Valencia, 24th – 26th January, 2018. With the aim of becoming an interactive forum for discussion and a common space for young and experienced international researchers, the scientific GEFES 2018 committee has worked hard in order to offer an attractive scientific programwith plenary and oral talks of a large variety of topics in Condensed Matter Physics.

The Institut Bisbe Sevilla from Calella at ICMAB learning about the nanomaterials of the future for electronics

On December 15 the Institut Bisbe Sevilla, from Calella, visited ICMAB and spent the morning with us. Marta Mas-Torrent, researcher at the NANOMOL group gave the seminar on "Nanomaterials of the future for electronics", in which she first introduced the scientific career and the concepts of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and then showed the students her research in this field. 

From nanoscience to space: Xavier Obradors at the inaugural lecture of his highschool in Manresa

The physicists Xavier Obradors, ICMABDirector, and Ignasi Ribas, Director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, IEEC), gave a joint lecture for the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Institute "Lluís de Peguera" in Manresa (26 October 2017), in which they both went as students. Their dialogue "From nanoscience to space" was followed by an enthusiast audience eager to learn. 

MetDrugs meeting: at the frontier between coordination chemistry and nanotechnology

Anna Roig, researcher at the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) group, participated on November 30 at the MetDrugs meeting,  this time focused on nanostructures and metal-drugs complexes for biomedical applications. Anna's talk was entitled “Iron oxide nanoparticles come in all flavours”. The scientific meeting was organized by the MetDrugs network and ICN2.

19 DEC: Christmas Lecture at ICMAB: "Re-reading Curie" by Xavier Roqué

This year, to celebrate Christmas, on Tuesday, December 19, we will have with us Xavier Roqué, Senior Lecturer in History of Science at UAB and member of the Phylosophy Dept. and of the Center for the History of Science (UAB). Xavier will give a Christmas Lecture entitled "Re-reading Curie", in which he will suggest new readings of, probably, the best-known woman scientist of the twentieth century: Marie Skłodowska Curie

After the seminar, there will be the traditional Christmas Concert by the ICMAB choir and the Christmas Buffet for all our staff.  

Becoming a Materials Detective for a day: interactive school visits at ICMAB

Within the program "El CSIC a l'aula", and the "Program of school activities from the Barcelona City Council" (PAE), the ICMAB opens its doors to Primary School students for the first time, and welcomes 10-11 years-old kids to visit their installations. One of the most successful activities proposed is the one called "Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials"(Become a materials detective).

Two projects from ICMAB researchers at the FINAL of the PRUAB Program "Generació d'Idees"

On November 30, 2017, the FINAL of the sixth edition of the "Generació d'Idees" Program, organized by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) and the "Xarxa de Referència en Biotecnologia" took place. In this year's edition, two projects from ICMAB researchers were on the final: Plant Healing,with the participation of Agnesse Rabissi, from the NN Group, and Saddle Pro, with the participation of Pablo O. Vaccaro, from the NANOPTO group.

The winning project of this year's edition was "Nanoplastics", which aims to create a biodegradable film to increase the safety of fresh food packaging and to extent the shelf life of these products. The project is formed by researchers from ICN2, CRAGand INC-UAB.  

Great success of the first meeting between scientific illustrators and researchers at ICMAB

The first initiative to bring together scientific illustrators and researchers took place on November 29 at ICMAB, the Institue of Materials Science of Barcelona. Nearly 20 illustrators specialized in scientific illustration came for one day to our center to meet some of the researchers from the Institute and its surroundings.

ICMAB hosts the Science Illustration exhibition by Roc Olivé

ICMAB participates in the initiative "Yo ilustro la ciencia 3" within Illustraciencia, an international cycle of activities between October and December 2017. We are hosting a Science Illustration exhibition by Roc Olivé Pous, specialized in paleoart, dinosaurs, biology and medicine, in the framework of the "Setmana de la Ciència 2017" activities organized by the CSIC in Catalunya. 

ICMAB at ExpoMiner: The science talks and demos attracted more than 450 visitors

ICMABparticipated on 10,11,12 November 2017 at ExpoMiner, the exhibition of minerals, fossils and jewelry, with some outreach talks given by four of our researchers, and science demos in our stand about superconducting materials, photovoltaic energy, batteries and graphene. According to ExpoMiner, which highlighted that the science talks and demos had been very popular among the visitors, all the talks and workshops of the exhibition attracted more than 450 visitors, which represented a 12.5 % increase respect to last year

10-12 NOV: EXPOMINER: Feel the energy of the earth... with us!

2017 is the year of minerals as an energy resource. EXPOMINER(10-12 November) has chosen as its theme the relationship between minerals, energy and sustainable development. Women in Science 150 years after Marie Curie was born

Marie Skłodowska Curie was born one 7 November 1867, 150 years ago. She is, probably, the most known woman in science. She is the only one that many people can identify and remember, the only one who won two Noble prizes: one in Physics (in 1903, for the discoveries on radioactivity) and one in Chemistry (in 1911, for the discovery of radium), and the first and only woman (for many years) who participated at the Solvay Conferences (the most famous one in1927, in the picture). 

ICMAB at the 100xCiencia.2 Meeting of Excellence in Research: Co-creating value in scientific research

On November 2-3, representatives from all of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Excellence Centres and Units are together at the ‘100xCiencia.2’ Meeting in Alicante (Spain) to share experiences around this year's topic, which is "Co-creating value in scientific research". Several experts in knowledge and technology transfer are invited to share their experiences in innovation, intelectual property and the creation of competitive spinoffs and enterprises.

100xCiencia.2 is the meeting of the Spanish Research Centres and Units of Excellence with the private sector, represented here by the technology-based industry, and other stakeholders involved in knowledge and technology transfer. The event will take place between November 2-3, 2017, in Alicante. 

The ICMAB Annual Report 2016 is now available

On 23 October 2017 we presented the ICMAB Annual Report 2016 at the Institute. This Annual Report presents new features compared to the previous ones. Firstly, there are two versions available: the printed version (also available online here), with the basic information about the center, including the main Scientific Highlights of the year and the main Facts & Figures; and the fully new and complete website, with an overview of the scientific and technological developments performed at ICMAB, and a complete list of all the activities.

As we already announced,  Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés Iglesias, from ICMAB, have been selected as finalists with their project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” in the XVIII Edition of "CiencIa en Acción" in the category "Science and Technology". Well, the FINAL day has arrived: tomorrow, Andrés and Guillermo will head to Izarra Centre in Ermua (Vizcaya, Basque Country) to defend their project in front of many others, from 6 to 8 October 2017

Francesc Teixidor, Invited Professor at the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum held in Nanjing University

In the morning of July 17, the 2017 Boron-Chemistry Micro-Forum started in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, at Nanjing University (China). Prof. Francesc Teixidor from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) was Invited Professor at this micro-forum, which was divided into two sections: one dedicated to Research Progress reports, and the other one to Academic Lectures. 

10-12 July: Nanoselect NOE Annual Meeting is here!

The NANOSELECT NOE: Advanced materials and NANOtechnologies for innovative electrical, ELECTronic and magnetoelectronic devices (NANOSELECT) coordinated by Prof. Xavier Obradors, director of the ICMAB-CSIC, is preparing its Annual Meeting for 2017. The meeting will be held in Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Girona) on July 10-12, 2017.

More than 15 research institutes and universities participated at the 10alamenos9 Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival with more than 100 activities

The biggest Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival in Spain, 10alamenos9, which takes place simultaneously in different cities (Barcelona, Campus UAB-Bellaterra, Zaragoza, San Sebastián and Madrid), has organized more than 100 activities and reached more than 50 primary schools and secondary high schools, with their respective students. More than 15 research institutes and universities participated in the event.

3D printing: teaching science and technology in a creative way, and an opportunity for R+D activities, providers and enterprises

During the Youth Mobile Festival Barcelona (YoMo) (February 27th - Mach 2nd), Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés from ICMAB used the 3Doodler 3D printing pens to teach the scientific method to those, young students and adults, approaching the ICMAB stand. The activity consisted in building a resistant bridge with the 3D printing pens.

The XVIII edition of Exporecerca Jove presents research projects of talented students

The XVIII edition of Exporecerca Jove was held on 6, 7, 8 April 2017 at Campus La Salle, in Barcelona. Exporecerca Jove presents research projects from young students, between 12 to 18 years old. The main objective is to encourage research among youngsters, exchange experiences and knowledge, and enhance the participation of students in fairs and conferences, both national or international. 

FUB+GRAN Mai és massa tard per aprendre nanotecnologia

Aquest any l’ICMAB ha participat a la cinquena edició del Programa Universitari FUB+GRAN “Saber per descobrir”, organitzat per la Fundació Universitària del Bages (UVIC-UCC), i adreçat especialment a majors de 55 anys amb inquietuds per aprendre més.  

HASTA EL 17 DE MAYO: INSPIRACIENCIA 2017

Hasta el 17 de mayo de 2017 se puede participar a través de su web: inspiraciencia.es. Las obras se pueden presentar en castellano, catalán, gallego y euskera, en dos categorías, joven y adulto. El concurso de relatos va acompañado de un ciclo de charlas dedicado en esta edición a las relaciones entre la química y la literatura.

Un nanómetro es la mil millonésima (10-9, “10 a la menos 9”) parte de un metro. Un tamaño realmente diminuto. El Festival pretende, de una forma amena y emocionante, acercar a todos los públicos la escala nanométrica, sus efectos y cómo este conocimiento va a cambiar nuestras vidas a través de innumerables aplicaciones y productos. ¡No importan la edad ni los conocimientos previos!

Éxito de la actividad Bridg3d en el YOMO (FOTOS)

El ICMAB ha estado estos días en el YOMO, un salón didáctico centrado en la juventud, vinculado al Mobile World Congress. Durante dos días los numerosos visitantes que pasaron por el taller, organizado por Andrés Gómez y Guillermo De Andrés, pudieron aprender qué es el método científico y se les invitó a ser científicos por un día aplicando los conocimientos adquiridos para construir puentes usando los lápices  3Doodler.
