Th article published in the Open Access journal ACS Omega "On the Study of Ca and Mg Deintercalation from Ternary Tantalum Nitrides" by M. Rosa Palacín, Amparo Fuertes et al. and the article "Role of Polymorphism and Thin-Film Morphology in Organic Semiconductors Processed by Solution Shearing" by Marta Mas-Torrent et al. have been selected for the the journal's first-ever Virtual Issue "Women at the Forefront of Chemistry". This special collection of articles, handpicked and guest-edited by the Associate Editor, Professor Luisa Torsi, celebrates the contributions of 50+ leading women scientists at various stages of their career, selected from around the world, who have published high-quality articles in our journal as corresponding authors.

The ICMAB is since last Monday 16 March 2020, an Institute with Restricted Access. Most of the laboraories are empty, the Scientific and Technical Services are closed, only the basic services are working and most of the people is working and staying at home. For this reason, when we heard that Personal Protection Equipmentwas needed in the hospitals and health centers, we had no doubt that we could donate some of the material that we had.
The EU project FETFX has completed its Journalist-in-the-lab programme last 24-26 February 2020. The initiative, designed by FETFX partner Fondazione iCons, allowed science communication students get hands on with content creation at the ICMAB and the ICN2 with researchers working on FET European projects.
Due to the expansion and the pandemic situation of COVID-19, and respecting the authorities and for our own responsibility, the ICMAB is declared from Monday, 16 March 2020, and until Sunday, 29 March 2020 (minimu), a CSIC Institute of Restricted Access. The basic services will continue to be provided, but the presence of staff in the center is minimized in order to restrict the movement of people to its maximum.
Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor were Invited Speakers at HALCHEM IX, the 9th International Meeting on Halogen Chemistry (HALCHEM IX), which was held at the University of Perugia, Italy, between 23 and 26 of September 2019. The Japanese industry has a high interest in halogens (especially in iodine), and they have always participated in the HALCHEM conferences. This is possibly the reason why the Japanese version of the C&E News has highlighted this scientific event in their pages.
On Thursday, 27 February 2020, Nora Ventosa, researcher at the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, and coordinator of the SMART-4-FABRY project will participate in the NanoRare Diseases Day at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, from 11 am to 1 pm.

Ashley Black is now currently working as postdoctoral fellow at ICMAB, where he is involved in two FET (Future Emerging Technologies) European Projects, on Calcium-based batteries (CARBAT) and Magnesium-based batteries (E-MAGIC), with M. Rosa Palacín.
The CSIC Catalunya organized a morning in which women scientists from different CSIC centers visited the school "Escola Can Maiol" in Sants, Barcelona, to talk and experiment with science. From the ICMAB, Arántzazu González, chemist, visited the group of 3r Primària (8-9 years old) and did some experiments to discover the acid/basic properties of some natural substances that we have at home by the change of color. Sants3Radio was there to talk with them!

On 28-30 January 2020 the Young Researchers Meeting in the field of Chemistry, organized by the Catalan Chemical Society (SCQ, IEC) will take place in Vilanova i la Geltrú. Many ICMAB PhD fellows will participate in the meeting presenting their research results, from curcuminoid-based compounds, fabrication of high-temperature superconducting layers, boron-based sensors, or bacteria-based protein nanoparticles for cell guidance and PAH-based electrochemical platforms.
On Thursday, 23 January, a group of 3r ESO students from the Institut La Guineueta high school, came to the ICMAB to spend the morning learning about the new materials and their properties. The group could participate in two workshops to discover the conductivity, fluorescence and magnetism of some materials and had the opportunity to visit the X-ray Diffraction Lab and the Transmission Electron Microscopy.

The last issue of the journal of the Catalan Chemical Society (Revista de la Societat Catalana de Química) includes two articles from ICMAB researchers. The first one is about graphene oxide nanocomposites decorated with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, and the second one is about the European project "Smart-4-Fabry", which develops a new nanomedicine for the treatment of the Fabry disease. This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three great scientists for the developement of Li-ion batteries. The Catalan Chemical Society (SCQ) wanted to dedicate this year's Christmas Conference to this fact, and invited M. Rosa Palacín to give the keynote lecture on this topic. The event took place on Thursday, 19 December 2019 at the IEC (Institut d'Estudis Catalans), in Barcelona.
On Friday, 22 November 2019, the Kursaal Theater in Manresa hosted the Graduation Event of the 113 students that finalized the studies at the Escola Politècnica Superior d'Enginyeria de Manresa (EPSEM)at the UPC Manresa. Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, was the "godfather" of the event, together with Ricard Font Hereu, President of the FGC. The event was a great celebration for the UPC students, who now face their future with multiple options!
The science outreach project "The energy of the future: from the lab to the classroom", prepared in collaboration with Funbrain, and with IP Mariano Campoy-Quiles, has been awarded with a FGCSIC "Cuenta la Ciencia" grant in its thrid call. The project, which will take place during the year 2020, aims at bringing the research performed at our labs to the primary and secondary schools, with attractive experiments related to energy prepared for the scholars.
In 2020, the ICMAB will be present at the next edition of YoMo "Youth Mobile" conference (25-29 Feb 2020) with two activities around women in science: the dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", which visibilized women scientists of our history, and the talk "The hidden truth: Women behing the periodic table", which talks about the different periodic table elements that have been discovered by women and some curiosity around women and the chemical elements. Both activities will take place on Thursday, 27 February 2020at La Farga de l'Hospitalet.
On November 22-23, 2019, representatives from all of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Excellence Centres and Units met at the ‘100xCiencia4’ Meeting in Donostia/San Sebastián (Spain) to share experiences around this year's topic, which is "What is science doing for you? Building bridges between science and society".
The Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), together with many research centers and universities, including the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), have initiated an art project that will represent in a different way thw world of nanotechnology: NANOCAEDRE. Susagna Ricart, from the ICMAB, participates in this project with her expertise in the superconducting phenomena. The presentation of the project will take place at the Basilica Sants Màrtirs Just i Pastor (Barcelona), on Tuesday, 10 December, at 7 pm.
A new protocol from Gervasi Herranz and the MULFOX group at ICMAB shows how magnetic fields can change the propagation of light in confined nanostructured materials and reveal enhanced optical responses. This new protocol is published as a VIDEO-ARTICLE at the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). The new protocol allows to directly study how magnetization changes the photonic response.
We would like to congratulate our colleagues from the NanoEduca programme, created by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) and Centre de Recursos Pedagògics Específics de Suport a la Innovació i la Recerca Educativa (CESIRE), for the 2018 National Award on Science Communication (Premi Nacional de Comunicació Científica 2018), which they received last night, Tuesday 3 December 2019, at the TNC.
UPDATE 10 March 2020: Due to the continuous change of measures of our governments in relation to the coronavirus propagation and the uncertainty this gives on the possibilities to held the workshop in honour of Jaume Veciana & Concepció Rovira, combined with the impossibility of many of the attendants to travel, we have decided to postpone the workshop after summer.
On Monday, 25 November 2019, a gathering in the entrance of the ICMAB building was announced between 11 and 11:15 am to show respect to the victims and concern for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Members of the ICMAB Gender Equality Committee read the Statement that the Gender Equality Committee and the Committee of Women and Science of the CSIC had prepared, on the occasion of this international day.
Every year the UAB organizes the Nobel Prize 2019conferences to talk about the science topics of the Nobel Prize. This year, M. Rosa Palacín, ICMAB researcher, will give the talk about the Nobel Prize 2019 in Chemistry, which was given to J. B. Goodenough, M. S. Whittingham and A. Yoshino for the Lithium-ion Batteries. The talks will be on Tuesday, 10 December, at 12 pm at the "Sala d'actes".

On Thursday, 19 December 2019, the film "El Enigma Agustina" will be screened at the ICMAB (VOSE). The film will be introduced with a talk by Agustí Nieto-Galan (Centre d’Història de la Ciència, CEHIC-UAB) entitled "Dreams of Modernity: Scientific Research and Cosmopolitanism in Spain (1900- ism in Spain (1900-1939)". The film will be followed by a colloquim about the Scientific Research in Spain before the Civil War and the role of women scientists at that time, and by the Christmas Songs by ICMAB Choir. During the Science Week (Setmana de la Ciència) 2019, which was between the 8 and 17 of November 2019, the ICMAB received the visit of 4 schools, which amounted a total of 185 students. The students could attend the "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers", visit some of our labs and participate in the workshops about "Properties of the Minerals and Periodic Table Elements".
The "Fira Recerca en Directe 2020", organized by the "Parc Científic de Barcelona" in collaboration with "la Caixa" Foundation, opens the Popular Election period, so everybody can vote for the projects that they would like to see in CosmoCaixa during the days of the faire (6-9 May 2020). One of the projects is proposed by the ICMAB and the Neuroscience Institute of the UAB (INc). The project is about "C. elegans, the ideal worm as a model organism to study diseases". Until 13 December you can vote for this project!

We participated with two outreach talks given by two of our researchers, and with workshops in our stand about the chemical elements, minerals, and their properties (conductivity, magnetism, fluorescence...). We had a great time! This event was part of the Science Week 2019.
During the Science Week 2019, in November, six of our researchers brought scientific research closer to the young students aged 15-17 years old within the framework of the programme "A researcher in your classroom". They went to five different highschools and gave a talk to the students, who had the opportunity to learn more about nanoscience and nanotechnology and about what is it like to be a scientist.
Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor were in Sfax (Tunisia), where they gave Plenary Talks at the Fourth International Conference of Engineering Sciences for Biology and Medicine (ESBM 2019) and celebrated the opening of the new school year of the "École supérieure polytechnique internationale privée de Sfax-ESPIN" as partner professors.

The First Annual Meeting of PhD researchers in Physics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona(TADeF) will take place next 20-21 November 2019 at the UAB Factulty of Science. From the ICMAB, Teresa Puig (SUMAN group) will give one of the keynote talks on "High Temperature Superconductors: Complex materials with novel physics opportunities". Martí Gibert, PhD researcher at the NANOPTO group, will participate in the meeting with the short talk "Near Infrared Organic Photodetectors based on Enhanced Charge Transfer State Absorption by Photonic Architectures".

We announce the forthcoming 2020 E-MRS Spring Meeting and Exhibit, that will be held in Strasbourg,France from 25-29 May 2020. Mariano Campoy-Quiles and Narís Mestres, ICMAB researchers, participate in the organization of some symposia in the fields of "Energy materials" and "Nanomaterials and advanced characterization". The new edition of the scientific photography contest FOTCIENCIA is now open! The aim of this initiative, organised by the CSIC and the FECYT, is to bring science and technology closer to society. The participants have until 16 December 2019 to send their photographies! Good luck!
In the framework of the Science Week (Setmana de la Ciència) celebrated between 8-17 November 2019, there will we a whole bunch of scientific outreach activities throughout the territory. More than 100 CSIC research centers and institutes have programmed more than 350 activities (around 50 of them in Catalunya), and other research centers, universities and institutions have organized plenty of things, including a great variety of activites: workshops, open days, live experiments, scientific tours, talks and seminars, theater, guided visits, exhibitions... The European Technology and Innovation Platform on Batteries, BatteRIes Europe, held its first General Assembly on 22 October 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. Following the launch of the platform in June 2019, the day was dedicated to setting up the ground of the European initiative supported by the European Commission that will shape the research ecosystem for batteries in Europe, through the election of its very first Governing Board. M. Rosa Palacín will be part of this Governing Board, in the area of "Future and Emerging Technologies".
For another year, the ICMAB will be present at EXPOMINER (8-10 November, Palau 1, Fira Barcelona), with more activities and talks! Come and listen to the amazing talks by our researchers Ana M. Directors of SOMMa Centres discussed at CNIO (Spanish National Cancer Research Center) in Madrid, the network's best practices in gender equality, to implement a change of culture that allows gender equality to be integrated into strategic science decisions. From the ICMAB, Riccardo Rurali, ICMAB Deputy Director and Coordinator of the Gender Equality Committe at the ICMAB, attended the event.
On 22-23 November, the new edition of the 100xCiencia meeting, the meeting of the Severo Ochoa centers and María de Maeztu units will take place in Donostia/San Sebastián! Nora Ventosa, researcher at the Nanomol Group will represent the ICMAB at the SOMMa General Assembly, and will give a talk on Technology Transfer in Nanomedicine on Saturday, 23 November in the morning (11 am).
This year, the Maker Faire Barcelona took place the weekend of 5-6 October in a new location: at the NAU BOSTIK, in the neighborhood of La Sagrera in Barcelona. The space was perfect for this kind of event, full of artists, inventors, creativity and sustainability. We felt really good there! From the ICMAB, Andrés Gómez and Anna May did two rounds of the workshop "Printing nanomaterials with 3Doodler" and gathered around 12-15 participants in each round. Thank you to the Maker Faire for counting on us!
The goal of the first Grenoble Barcelona Twin Conference, celebrated at the CNRS Campus in Grenoble on 23-25 October, is to put together Barcelona and Grenoble scientists working on condensed matter, quantum physics, materials science and electrical engineering. Many ICMAB researchers have participated in the meeting!
In the morning of Thursday, 26 September 2019, Judith Morlà, TecnioSpring researcher at the Nanomol Group, and Andrés Gómez, Senior Technician at the Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab, became "A researcher in your classroom": they went to give some science talks to two high schools, in the framework of the European Researchers' Night.
We have a new Helium Liquefier! With the new ATL 160 QuantumDesign equipment, we will be able to satisfy between 90-95 % of our Helium needs (now we were around 60 %). We use liquid Helium at the Low Temperatures and Magnetometry Service, since magnetic measurements are carried out at extremely low temperatures (5 K!). Liquid Helium is used as a refrigerant.
The European Researchers’ Night, since its firs edition in 2005, brings science, technology and researchers closer to the general public on the last Friday of September. The ICMAB participated in this year's edition with talks, workshops and a dramatised lecture at the event organized at CosmoCaixa Science Museum in Barcelona, and in the CSIC "Residència d'Investigadors".
The ICMAB is now a member of SECPHO, a national technological innovation cluster formed by companies, technology centres and research centres. SECPHO is focused on promoting technological innovation through the application of photonic technologies, or technologies based on light, to all types of sectors of our economy.
During the European Researchers' Night celebrated on Friday, 27 September 2019 in Cosmocaixa Barcelona (Nit Jove de la Recerca), the representation of the dramatised lecture "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram Followers" was held (twice!) with a great amount of people in the audience! We could expland the knowledge of great women scientists to all those who came to see the Châtelet team in action!

"Matheroes" is a scientific project designed by the ICMAB-CSIC in collaboration with the FECYT (Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología). The weekend 19-20 October 2019, CosmoCaixa hosts the exhibition about minerals and the Periodic Table, in the framework of the celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements. The exhibition is entitled "Explora els Minerals: de la mina a la Taula Periòdica dels Elements" and will include several samples of minerals and some new materials and devices related with the chemical elements. The Department of Postgraduate and Specialization (DPE) of the CSIC has announced the open call of the science outreach contest “Yo Investigo. Yo soy CSIC” with the aim that predoctoral researchers from the CSIC present their doctoral thesis to a non-specialist audience through a video of maximum 3 minutes in duration.
October 9, 2019, is the World Nanotechnology Day. The working group on "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology" of the Advanced Materials Cluster (Clúster de Materials Avançats de Catalunya) has decided to present on that day the platform NanoHUB.cat. The LEITAT will host the event, which will take place from 9 am to 12:30 pm.
Wiley celebrates the International Year of the Periodic Table with an interactive Periodic Table of books devoted to each one of the elements! In the case of Boron, the featured book is "Boron-Based Compounds: Potential and Emerging Applications in Medicine" edited by Evamarie Hey-Hawkins and Clara Viñas Teixidor.
This sixth edition of the Maker Faire Barcelona sets its location at Nau Bostik, an emblematic citizen led cultural center, in the neighborhood of La Sagrera. On 27 September, during the Young Researchers' Night in CosmoCaixa, you will be able to enjoy the dramatised reading created by the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona. The play tells a story that takes place in the palace of Madame Châtelet, during the 18th century. Châtelet was a French mathematician and physicist. In chronological order, a series of wise women from the history of science will enter her salon, and will explain us their lives and discoveries.
To celebrate the 20th anniversaty of the CSIC "Residència d'Investigadors" in Barcelona, the institution has prepared the document "Reptes globals: perspectives des de la Ciència" (Global challenges: perspectives from Science), in which different experts in several fields explain how they see some of the most important challenges that our society is facing. From the ICMAB, Xavier Obradors writes about "Advanced Functional Nanomaterials: the key for the fourth Industrial Revolution". The document is available in Spanish and Catalan.

In the afternoon of Monday, 9 September 2019, a meeting was held between the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the research centres and units distinguished with the certificate of excellence Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu, and representatives of 15 autonomous communities. The purpose of the meeting at the Ministry was to highlight the impact of the Severo Ochoa - María de Maeztu programme, and to expose its benefits for the consolidation of excellence research of the different autonomous communities.
Naukas Bilbao is one of the greatest event in Science Communication in Spain. This year the 9th edition of Naukas will take place in Bilbao, from 19 to 22 September 2019, at the Palacio Euskalduna, which can host an audience of more than 2,000 people! This year, the Nanomol Group researcher Dolores Bueno, will give a talk about the project in which she is participating, Smart4Fabry. The talk is entitled "Share your rare!" and will be on Friday, 20 September, at 11:10 am. Good luck, Dolores!
The culture and science communication conference Campus Gutenberg-CosmoCaixa will present this year a programme with more than 50 science communication and outreach activities. The event will take place on 16-17 September at CosmoCaixa. The "Societat Catalana de Química" (SCQ-IEC) organizes every year the contest on the best research chemistry projects for secondary school students (Premis als Treballs de Recerca de Batxillerat dins l'Àmbit de la Química). The award for the finalist students is a two-week scientific internship in a Catalan research center or university during July 2018. This year, at the ICMAB we had Nerea and Helena, who spent two weeks with us!
This year the ICMAB hosted three (3) students from the program "Joves i Ciència" from Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera: Carla París, Teresa Echevarría and Benet Fité. They came to our Institute to do some research stays with some of our researchers, in the fields of superconducting materials, solar cells, and metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs). And they dit SUCH a great job!
Elies Molins participated in the creation of the exhibition "Energía: origen y final del todo", which was exhibited at Laboratorium Museum in Bergara (Basque Country) from January to May 2019. The curators and designers were Carlota Oliver, Javier Tejada (Universitat de Barcelona) and Elies Molins (ICMAB-CSIC).
The CSIC Annual Report 2018 is now online. You can find information about the 120 research centers and units, 1,597 research groups, and 10,642 total staff. The ICMAB article "Hydroxypropyl cellulose photonic architectures by soft nanoimprinting lithography" (Nature Photonics12, 343 (2018)) appears as one of the highlights in the Materials Science and Technology area.
The 33rd issue of the electronic journal of the CSIC Library Network "Enredadera", entitled Ciencia Abierta y la Red de Bibliotecas y Archivos del CSIC, is now available. The 9th European Conference on Boron Chemistry (EuroBoron9) will take place in Barcelona in 2022, and will be organized by ICMAB researchers, Rosario Núñez and Jose Giner. This year, on 24-28 June 2019, the researchers from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Lab (LMI) participated in EuroBoron8 in Montpellier, presenting many posters and oral communications.
Clara Viñas and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Book, have written Chapter 5 of Volume 1 of the "Handbook of Boron Science". The chapter is entitled: "Halogenated Icosahedral Carboranes: A Platform for Remarkable Applications". The handbook counts with 4 volumes, the first one being "Boron in Organometallic Chemistry". The handbook is edited by Narayan S Hosmane (Northern Illinois University, USA)andRobert Eagling.
The Prisa Group is organising on Thursday 11 July in Madrid the conference "The challenges of the electric car", a meeting that will be opened by the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, and will include, among other interventions, two round tables in which experts from the sector will debate on how to generate electricity in a sustainable form, and on the transition of the automotive industry towards sustainable mobility. M. Rosa Palacín will be in the first roundtable "¿Cómo generar electricidad ecológica?".

Every spring, the ICMAB celebrates its Anniversary. This year, we celebrated it on Friday, 14 June 2019. A morning full of different activites was organised by our staff: a foot orienteering race organised by Ferran Macià, Poker, chess, and Party & Co. tournements, a swing class by Swing UAB, a sketching workshop by Alejandro Santos, a cakes and a world cooking contest, and the traditional tennis table tournement. Núria Crivillers was in Mollina (Málaga) from 17 to 20 June 2019 to participate as member of the jury on the "Certamen Jóvenes Investigadores" in which young researchers presented their research projects. Núria Crivillers was in charge of evaluating the projects in the field of physics, chemistry and mathematics. The CSIC sponsors and offers various stays at their researh institutes as part of the awards.

On Wednesday, 12 June 2019, the Quantum exhibition at CCCB received the visit of three scientists working in Quantum research at the ALBA Synchrotron: Gervasi Herranz, from the ICMAB, Salvador Ferrer, from ALBA, and Jordi Fraxedas, from the ICN2. The three researchers talked to an audience of about 40 people about their quantum experiments at the ALBA synchrotron.
Xavier Obradors participated on June 19, 2019, on a roundtable about the "Energy of the future" in the framework of the European Week of Sustainable Energyin Vil·la Urània (Barcelona). Obradors gave an introductory talk on "Nanotechnology and Energy Transition" and then participated in the discussion with the other experts in the field from different research centers and organisations.
On Friday, 10 May 2019, we received the visit of a class of 25 students from 4t ESO from the Escola Pia de Granollers, who came to learn about "The nanomaterials of the future for nanomedicine" and, particularly, those for drug delivery. Dr. Nora Ventosa, reseracher at the Nanomol Group, and Vicepresident of the Catalan Chemical Society (SCQ) gave a talk on nanotechnology, materials for nanomedicine and focused on liposomes and nanocapsules for drug delivety.

Our traditional photo contest, FOTICMAB, is already a consolidated activity and receives every year a high participation. This year, we had three categories: scientific, artistic and humoristic. The artistic category was the one with the highest participation (27 photos), followed by our most favourite scientific category (12 photos) and a humoristic category, with (only) 5 photos. We also received one video in the ClowntICMAB video category!
Anna Morales, alias SizeMatters in YouTube, is a Researcher in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and a YouTuber. She owns the channel "SizeMatters", which is a nanoscience and nanotechnology channel in Spanish. In her last video, she explains the concepts of nanotechnology in some Marvel superheroes, and also in our Matheroes: ElectroWoman, Magnon, Bionanocapsule and Fotoenergy!
The book "Oxide Spintronics" (Pan Stanford Publishing) has recently been published. Ignasi Fina and Gervasi Herranz, reserachers at the MULFOX group (Laboratory of Multifunctional Thin Films and Complex Structures) have co-authored the book, collaborating in some chapters about spintronic in multiferroics, and orbital symmetry and electronic properties of 2D electron systems.
We received a call from one of the students of 1st BTX of the Institut Marina, from La Llagosta. They wanted to visit us, since they had seen us at the "Fira de la Recerca en Directe" at CosmoCaixa Barcelona. So we agreed they would come and visit us. On Friday 24 May 2019 they came to the ICMAB to discover the "Materials of the future for energy" and to celebrate a EU Energy Day with us.
The Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera develops the program "Bojos per la Ciència" to open the doors of the most relevant research institutes to the most excellent secondary school students. The ICMAB joined in 2017 the initiative "Bojos per la Física" coordinated by the ICN2, and the IFAE. This year, Ignasi Fina and Jordi Faraudo were in charge of showing piezoelectricity and molecular simulation to the students.
The IX AUSE Conference and 4th ALBA User’s Meeting 2019, jointly organized by AUSE (the Spanish Synchrotron User Association) and ALBA Synchrotron, will be held in ALBA synchrotron, Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona) during Tuesday-8th and Thursday-10th of October 2019. On Friday, 15 March 2019, the secondary school INS Mercè Rodoreda (Hospitalet de Llobregat) celebrated their "V Scientific Day" (V Jornada Científica) with scientific activities for their students, from 1st ESO to 2nd BTX. José Vidal-Gancedo, Reseracher at ICMAB, was one of the invited speakers. He had the big challenge of talking about "Organic radicals for biomedical applications" to 3rd and 4th ESO students.
The Material-ES scientific magazine is published every three months by the Spanish Materials Society (SOCIEMAT). They are always looking for authors that would like to publish an article with them. Written works in Spanish and English will be accepted. Once received, they will be scheduled for publication in the next issues.
On 5 June 2019 we celebrate the World Environment Day to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. The event called "Environment and Society" is organized at IDAEA-CSIC. Nora Ventosa, researcher at the ICMAB and vice-president of the SCQ, will open the event, which has the Periodic Table as main theme, and in which all the speakers are women scientists!
In the framework of the European Week of Sustainable Energy, experts from the field of energy transition will talk about the energy of the future and the social impact of the energetic system as we know it. Xavier Obradors, from the ICMAB will give an introductory talk. A roundtable with the participation of members of IREC, ICN2, ICFO, CNM, ICMAB and "Xarxa per la Sobirania Energètica" will follow.
This year the ICMAB has participated for the third time in the seventh edition of the University Programme FUB+GRAN "Saber per descobrir", organized by the Fundació Universitària del Bages (UVIC-UCC), and addressed to people of more than 55 years old, who have interest in learning more. On Wednesday, 29 May 2019, the students came to visit the ICMAB to see some of our scientific and technical services.
On June 4 the final event of Nanoinventum will take place at the Faculties of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Barcelona. Primary school students and their teachers from 5 different schools, involving more than 200 students, will present the work in nanorobots that they have carried out this year. They will also interview Anna Roig (ICMAB) and Mercè Segarra (UB) to know more about the life of a scientist.
The University of Bologna and Park Systems are proud to announce the 2nd NanoScientific Forum Europe 2019 (NSFE 2019) on September 11 – 13, 2019. Energy Days are organised by local public and private organisations to celebrate the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2019, organised by the European Commission, between 17-21 June 2019. Energy Days are activities and events that promote clean energy transition. Any activity can be an Energy Day – from a workshop, to a competition, to a tour of a power station – provided it engages citizens and energy stakeholders in building the Energy Union. At the ICMAB, our Energy Day will be on June 17, 2019, with the ICMAB Periodical Lecture given by Jordi Llorca, on Hydrogen!
Mariona Coll and Josep Fontcuberta from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), Fabio Miletto Granozio from the CNR-SPIN (Complesso Universitario di Monte Sant’Angelo, Napoli, Italy) and Nini Pryds from the Department of Energy Storage and Conversion, Technical University of Denmark, have edited the compendium "Towards Oxide Electronics: a Roadmap" published recently in Applied Surface Science. The article counts with 28 contributions from 56 authors of 42 academic institutions and industries from Europe, USA and Japan. The compendium has 93 pages and includes 913 references!
On Monday, 27 May 2019, Gerard Tobias was in charge of giving the talk within the "Dilluns de Ciència" conference cycle in commemoration of the 150 years of the Periodic Table of the Elements, at the Residència d'Investigadors of the CSIC. Gerard's talk was entitled "El carboni: de l’origen de la vida a la nanociència", and is about carbon nanomaterials and their applications. Luckily the conference was filmed and now you can watch it online!

The 16th edition of the NanoSpain Conference, annual appointment for experts in nanoscience and nanotechnologies, takes place at the Parc Científic of Barcelona on May 28-31, 2019. Many ICMABers are attending the conference, including Anna Laromaine as Invited Speaker, and Jaume Veciana as Advisory Board.
The Nanostructured Materials for Optoelectronics and Energy Generation (NANOPTO) group has auto-edited a video in which the process of fabrication or organic solar cells with thickness gradients is explained. This process is part of the ERC project by Mariano Campoy-Quiles "FOREMAT: Finding a needle in a haystack: Efficient identification of high performing organic energy materials".

The CSIC Delegation in Catalunya organizes the IX edition of short-stories inspired in science "INSPIRACIENCIA". The short texts can be written in Catalan, Spanish, Galician and Euskera. They must have a maximum of 800 words. There are two categories: Young, between 12 and 17 years old; and Adult, from 18 years old. Deadline to participate: 19 June 2019.
During three days, between 20-22 May, the Pint of Science Festival, which brings science to bars and pubs, will take place in many cities of Spain. Vic will host this festival in La Jazz Cava, and Mariona Coll will be there the night of Wednesday, 22 May 2019.
On June 6 and 7, "Som Elèctrics" will celebrate their fourth congress at the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC) in Terrassa. The event will deal with the energy transition and electrical mobility from a current and future perspective. The contents will be structured in two blocks: "Transformation and awareness" and "New systems of energy generation and consumption". M. Have you ever thought if the carbon-carbon (C-C) bond distance is always the same, or it can change? And if it changes, which is the maximum distance of this kind of bond? An article published in "Chemical & Engineering News!" addressed this topic. After this article was first published, Clara Viñas contacted C&EN to let them know that even longer carbon-carbon bonds exist than the ones they mentioned: In 2002, a team including Clara Viñas described a 2.022 Å long carbon-carbon bond in an inorganic cluster (Inorg. Chem. 2002, DOI: 10.1021/ic011285z).
Clara Viñas, Rosario Núñez and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Laboratory at ICMAB, and Isabel Romero, from the Universitat de Girona, co-authored the Wiley-VCH book "Smart Inorganic Polymers: Synthesis, Properties, and Emerging Applications in Materials and Life Sciences", in particular, the chapter "Highlighting the Binding Behavior of Icosahedral Boron Clusters Incorporated into Polymers: Synthons, Polymers Preparation, and Relevant Properties".

On Thursday, 11 April 2019, more than 200 students aged 15-18 years old, could enter the nanoworld during the Festival on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology 10alamenos9, organized by the UAB, ICMAB, ICN2 and IMB-CNM at the UAB Campus, with the collaboration of the ICE (Institut de Ciències de l'Educació UAB).
The 10alamenos9 Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology arrives to its 4th edition! On April 2019, more than 1,000 participants (around 700 secondary school students, 150 primary school students), will participate in the more than 70 activities prepared by all the entities collaborating in this macro-event, that takes place in many cities around Spain, including Barcelona, Zaragoza, Valencia, Bilbao and Madrid...
Ferran Macià, researcher at ICMAB in the MULFOX group has been selected to participate in the Spanish edition of the international science outreach programme “I’m a scientist, get me out of here!”. The 2019 edition of “Somos científicos, ¡Sácanos de aquí!” takes place from 1-12 April 2019. During this time, Ferran will chat in a multidisciplinary group of scientists – the CSIC zone – that includes researchers from other CSIC centres.
On Wednesday, 27 March 2019, we received the visit of Engineering Undergraduate students from the Escola Universitària Salesiana de Sarrià (EUSS) (Salesian University School of Sarrià). The EUSS is a center afiliated to the UAB created in 1994 and located in Barcelona. Xavier Obradors gave a first overview to the ICMAB research and then the students could visit some of our labs.
The ICMAB is involved in the Open Innovation Forum 2019, where companies launch technological challenges and universities and research centres suggest solutions. Our Technology Transfer Officer, Alfonso del Rey, and some of our researchers are their to present their innovations, tackle the existing challenges and have meetings with multiple companies that might be interested in them. The first meeting takes place on 3 April in CaixaForum.
One of our workshops for primary school students called "Become a Materials Detective" is the star of the TV children's show "Catacrak" from Barcelona Televisió (betevé), showcasted on Sunday 31 March 2019! Students from the school "Escola Mestre Morera" from Barcelona came to ICMAB to participate in the activity, in which they are introduced to the nanoworld and to the daily life of minerals. On Friday, 29 March 2019, the "Matheroes: Supermaterials, the materials of the future" were presented for a school class of students aged 11-12 (6è Primària) from Sabadell in the Ponent Library in Sabadell (Biblioteca de Ponent). Núria Crivillers, Juan-Luís García-Pomar and Anna May Masnou, presented some of the supermaterials and their properties and applications.
The students of physics and chemistry of 4th ESO of the highschool "La Tordera" in Santa Maria de Palautordera received the visit on 6 February 2019 of Anna Laromaine, researcher at ICMAB. Anna visited the highschool in the framework of the #11F2019, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, in which many researchers gave talks in primary and secondary schools during that week.
On Thursday 21 March, the Superconducting Materials group was at the "Espai Ciència" of the "Saló de l'Ensenyament" at the CSIC-Catalunya stand, which included different kinds of activities from different Catalan CSIC research centers. The Superconducting team showed the visitors the science behing the levitating train, liquid nitrogen and the properties of nanoparticles.
On Monday, 18 March, the meeting "Science and Research in the Agenda 2030" (Ciencia e Investigación en la Agenda 2030) took place in La Moncloa (Madrid), with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, and the High Comissioner for the Agenda 2030, Cristina Gallach. The CSIC President, Rosa Menéndez, participated in the event, and Mariano Campoy-Quiles, from ICMAB-CSIC, attented the event, together with 150 representatives of the science, research and innovation field in Spain.
Terrassa held on 6-7 March 2019 the first edition of the "Women, Science and Technology" (WSciTech19) Conference (Congrés de Dones, Ciència i Tecnologia) and the "Châtelet team" at ICMAB presented their dramatised lecture "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" as a tool to visibilize the wise women in the history of science. Susagna Ricart and Anna May, in representation of the team, presented a Poster, and an Oral Communication, which resulted in a fantastic colloquium.
The members of the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) Group, were last week during four days at CosmoCaixa for the "Fira Recerca en Directe", where research groups from different universities and research centers present their research to primary and secondary schools and families. The SUMAN group showed how to prepare superconducting thin films, and how levitating trains work.

On Monday, 4 February 2019, the Paranimf of the Universitat de Barcelona hosted the 7th edition of the Interdisciplinary Meeting of Predoctoral Researchers (JIPI, Jornada d'Investigadors Predoctorals Interdisciplinària), organized by PhD fellows and supported by many entities and organizations, including the ICMAB-CSIC. M. Rosa Palacin was invited in the closing session of the event, in which some of our ICMAB PhD researchrers participated.
On Friday, 1 February 2019, students from the Centre d'Estudis Roca school, in Barcelona, came to the ICMAB to discover the materials of the future in solar energy! The visit consisted in a first talk from Mariano Campoy-Quiles, researcher at the ICMAB, followed by a visit to four different labs: SEM, XRD, AFM and NANOPTO labs. The visit is in the framework of the ESCOLAB programme of the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
Arántzazu González, researcher from the ICMAB-CSIC, went on 11 February to a Primary School (Can Maiol) to talk to the students and visibilize women scientists, within the initative "Nuestras científicas: Jornada de investigadoras actuales y futuras" of the CSIC-Catalunya. The initiative appeared on the TVE1 news programme "L'informatiu" at 2 pm on 11 February 2019. Look at it here, from minute 16:04!
The CSIC Delegation in Catalunya wants to contribute to the promotion of scientific vocations in young girls, and facilitate the contact between them and the scientists from the nearby research centers. For this reason, an educational action in the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February) is organized, consisting on school visits by some CSIC researchers, who will explain their research projects and their life as a scientist to primary school students.
We heard with great sadness that Dominique Givord, CNRS researcher in Grenoble, passed away this week. Many researchers from the ICMAB collaborated with him and worked directly with him. Dominique contributed to the build of the ICMAB by inspiring many of our research activities and research lines, supporting young scientists and advising us on the big challenges of magnetic materials, as required by our modern and future society. His loss is felt by many of us.

From 7 to 11 February, Barcelona will be the City of Science. The Biennal Ciència i Ciutat will fill the city with activities related with science: talks, debates, roundables, exhibitions, etc. The ICMAB will also participate by collaborating in two roundtables about Chemistry and Health, and Chemistry and Bateries (8 Feb, Cosmocaixa). The ICMAB will be present at the Conference about women, science and technology "Dones, Ciència i Tecnologia" presenting our dramatised lecture "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" as a tool to enhance the visibility of the role of women scientists throughout history.
On 7-8 March 2019, the VI Strategic Immersion of the Advanced Materials Cluster (Cluster MAV), in collaboration with ACCIÓ, took place in Sitges. Our Technology Transfer Officer, Alfonso del Rey, attented the event, which main aim was to know the main trends and world challenges in the advanced materials field.
A broad and comprehensive review on thermoelectric materials has been published in "Materials Science and Engineering: R: Reports", a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Elsevier established in 1993 with an impact factor of more than 25! The review, with 47 pages, includes the participation of Mariano Campoy-Quiles and Bernhard Dörling from the ICMAB-CSIC, and 12 more institutions around the world (Italy, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and Spain).
Jordi Faraudo, researcher at the Materials Simulation and Theory Department from ICMAB, is the Guest Editor of this Special Issue of the MDPI Entropy journal devoted to "Thermodynamics and Entropy for Self-Assembly and Self-Organization". The Deadline for manuscripts submissions is 31 July 2019.
Alejandro Santos is the Librarian & Documentalist of ICMAB. His office is right inside the Manuel Cardona Library, at ICMAB. However, during his free time he is also a professional sketcher, and during the last years he has participated in numerous projects on "scientific sketching" in different research centers in the Barcelona Area. On Thursday, 20 December 2018, he gave a talk at the IMB-CNM-CSIC about sketching and science entitled "Sketching y Ciencia. Divulgando dibujando".
The biennial of Physics will visit the capital of the river Ebre for the first time since 1950. For the organizers, who represent most of the departments and research centers of the University of Zaragoza and the CSIC with activity in physics, it is at the same time a exciting event and a responsibility.

This year, the 17th edition of the "Fira Recerca en Directe", organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) in collaboration with Obra Social "la Caixa", will count with the participation of the "Superconducting and Large Scale Nanostructures" group (SUMAN), which will show, among others, the levitating superconducting train. 2019 will be the 150th anniversary since Dmitry Mendeleev discovered the Periodic System and has been proclaimed the "International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements" (IYPT2019) (AITP in Catalan).
The next "Dilluns de Ciència" conference cycle will be in commemoration of the 150 years of the Periodic Table of the Elements. The talks will take place between April and June 2019 at the CSIC "Residència d'Investigadors", Mondays at 6:30 pm. On 27 May 2019, Gerard Tobias, ICMAB researcher, will talk about "Carbon: from the origin of life to nanoscience".
During three days, between 20-22 May, the Pint of Science Festival, which brings science to bars and pubs, will take place in many cities of Spain. Sant Cugat del Vallès will, for the first time, host this festival! The "Cal Temerari" bar will be full of science for three days!

The exhibition “Quantica” gives us the keys to understanding the principles of fundamental physics, and it does so through the joint creative work of scientists, educators and artists. The project invites the public to browse freely, to awaken their curiosity, and to critically evaluate the new paradigms of modern science. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, 9 April 2019 at 7 pm at CCCB, and the exhibition will be open from 10 April to 24 September 2019.
The ICMAB research is present at the 10th International Postgraduate and Continuous Training Forum in Madrid in the CSIC stand (5E01). The forum opens its doors on 28-30 March from 10 am to 8 pm. If you are a student and/or a professional in the education field, here you will find endless options to expand your academic education: masters, doctorates, postgraduate studies, or language schools, in business schools, educational centers, universities, or research centers.
The next conference cycle "Dilluns de Ciència" is about crystals and life. Two of the five conferences of the cycle will be given by two ICMAB researchers, Dra. Núria Aliaga (ICREA Reserach Professor) and Dr. Gerard Tobias (Tenured Scientist at ICMAB). All the talks will be at the "Residència d'Investigadors" at 6:30 pm, and will take place always on a Monday. The first talk is on January, 21, and the last one will be on April, 29, 2019.
The Phosphorus, Boron and Silicon (PBSi) Conference, held in Barcelona on 10-12 December 2018, counted with the participation of 150 scientists, and was chaired by Prof. Clara Viñas, from ICMAB-CSIC, and Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkings from Universität Leipzig. According to the participants, the conference was a great success!
On Wednesday, 19 December 2018, we celebrated Christmas at our Institute. We had a full programme consisting in a Christmas lecture on "Science dissemination 2.0", then the ICMAB choir sang the Christmas songs, and then we had some Christmas finger food for all our staff.
Within the programme "A researcher in your classroom" (Un investigador a la teva aula), researchers from the ICMAB can spend a class at one secondary or primary school and show the students what it is like to be a scientist and the research in nanomaterials performed at our Institute.
On Friday, 14 December 2018, 25 secondary school students from the "Escola Vedruna Gràcia" visited the ICMAB thanks to the ESCOLAB programme. The students, all from the scientific branch, could enjoy a talk on "Nanomaterials for nanomedicine" by Anna Laromaine, from the NN group, and then visiti some of our Scientific Services.
On Tuesday, 27 November 2018, we had a very special visit in our Institute: "the scientists" class formed by 24 six-year old students from "La Trama" school in Sabadell visited us. It was a fantastic visit. All the kids were very happy to become real scientists for a day, and to visit the laboratories, the clean room, the glove boxes, the microscopes and even to perform an X-ray diffraction experiment to discover what is sand made of.
During two mornings, 12 and 13 November 2018, the ICMAB hosted the workshop for secondary school students "Become a materials detective" (Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials) to celebrate the Science Week 2018. Four classes of 2nd ESO from the IES Vallès (Sabadell) came to ICMAB by train and became scientists for a day.
On Thursday 25 October, the students from 2n BTX from the "Col·legi Maristes de Montserrat" (Lleida) took the bus and came to our center to spend an afternoon learning about nanotechnology and supermaterials! They could enjoy the visit of the "Matheroes" exhibition, a talk from one of our researchers, and a visit to our installations.
Arántzazu González, Ramon y Cajal researcher at ICMAB and participant of the program "A Researcher in your classroom" was at two primary schools in November, in the framework of the "Science Week" to show the students what is a scientist and what type of research we do at the ICMAB.
On 26 October 2018, Anna Laromaine participated in the project "Ciencia y Tecnología en femenino", organized by the Asociación de Parques Científicos y Tecnológicos de España (APTE) and with the support of Bayer, which took place at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). The project consisted of a whole morning of science talks, workshops and a visit to the exhibition "Women that changed the world" for secondary school students.

A new book has just been released to the market. It is a science book about light, but not just that, it is a book about experiments to play with light "Descubriendo la luz: experimentos divertidos de óptica". The dynamic workshop on "Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, Society and Graphic Design" will explore the use of methodologies of graphic design, such as design thinking, to open up new ways to bring nanoscience and nanotechnology closer to society in an efficient way.
The 4th conference on "Business Women" repeated enue in Vilanova i la Geltrú, on Friday, 26 October. Imma Ratera, researcher at the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, participated in a roundtable about the role of women in the modern society.
The following article appeared in the ERC Newsletter on 26 October 2018. It is about the project #LasCientíficasCuentan, which explalins complex science through the voice of fifteen female ERC grantees in Spain. From ICMAB, Teresa Puig and Marta Mas-Torrent participated in the project, funded by the FECYT and the FGCSIC. They give talks, participate in roundtables, and appear in some videos explaining their research!
The programme A researcher in your classroom "Un investigador a la teva aula" brought Imma Ratera, researcher at the NANOMOL group, to the secondary highschool INS Alba del Vallès, in Sant Fost de Campsentelles (Vallès Oriental) on 18 October 2018.
The dramatised reading "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers" will open this STEAM day, full of science and technology activities for girls, that will take place on Saturday, 17 November, in the "Biblioteca Vapor Badia" in Sabadell. After the "Châtelet" play, which features some female scientists of our history, a bunch of workshops will be hapenning. From ICMAB, Andrés Gómez will bring the "3D printing bridges"activity.

The Catalan Association of Science Communication (ACCC) organizes a day in tribute to Jorge Wagensberg at CosmoCaixa, on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The physicist Jorge Wagensberg died on March 3, 2018.

The idea is to share the idea that Open Access is the most effective way to disseminate research!

From Monday 22 October the exhibition MATHEROES: Supermaterials, the hereos of the future will be at the ICMAB hall. During the days that the five Matheros will be here with us, some activities are organized: we will present the project to the UAB students, we will carry out a roundtable about the image of women in audiovisual content, and some of our researchers will offer guided visits for our support staff.
On Thursday, 18 October, the inaugural session to inaugurate the RACAB academic course 2018-2019 will be given by Prof. Xavier Obradors, which will present the report entitled "Els nanomaterials per a la transició energètica" (Nanomaterials for the energetic transition). The conference will take place at the RACAB at 7 pm.

On Friday, 28 September 2018, the ICMAB and most of the research centers in Catalonia, Spain and Europe, celebrated the 2018 European Researchers' Night (named "Nit Europea de la Recerca" in Catalonia). The ICMAB was at CosmoCaixa Barcelona from 7 pm until 11 pm for a night of nanoscience and nanotechnology workshops and a talk on spin currents!
"Matheroes" is a scientific culture project designed by the ICMAB-CSIC in collaboration with the FECYT (Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología) - Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. The project will be presented on Friday, 28 September, in CaixaForum Zaragoza, within the programme of the European Reseachers Night (La Noche Europea de los Investigadores), coordinated by Esciencia.
The inaugural conference of the 2018-2019 course of the Societat Catalana de Física will be "Feynman i els seus diagrames: una aportació clau a la teoria quàntica de camps aportacions fonamentals" by Dr. Albert Bramon, Emeritus Professor of the Physics Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
"Comunicació Institucional: un joc d'estratègia". This was the title of the LAB IDEAS workshop at Campus Gutenberg 2018, which Anna May Masnou, Communication Officer at ICMAB, organized together with seven other Communication Officers of research centers and institutions of the UAB Campus: Alexandra Canet (CVC), Àlex Argemí (ICN2), Pere Figuerola (ICP), Sebastián Grinschpun (IFAE), Isabel Lopera (ICTA), Ona Tribó (PRUAB) and Gemma Ortiga (PRUAB).
On Wednesday, 5 September, the ICMAB staff could bring their children, their grandchildren, and even their nephews and nieces to spend a morning at our centre full of scientific activities for another edition of the Kids Day!
In the end, more than 75 kids of ages between 1 and 17 joined us! Many volunteers from the ICMAB helped out during the day, organizing the activities and taking care of the kids. Thank you all for your great collaboration and participation!
The European Researchers' Night (Nit Europea de la Recerca) is celebrated throughout Europe on the last Friday of September, with the aim of bringing science, research and technology closer to the public. In Catalonia, under the theme "Research, heritage of all", outreach activities will take place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September in Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, Girona, Blanes and Vic, among other places.
The ICMAB will participate with some highschool talks on Friday morning, with a nanoscience workshop and a Speaker's Cornet talk in CosmoCaixa on Friday evening, and in the Biblioteca Sagrada Família on Saturday morning with "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers".
On Thursday, 20 September, Dra. Nora Ventosa, researcher at the NANOMOL group at ICMAB, and member of the Catalan Society of Chemistry (SCQ) will participate in the event organized by the SCQ and the University of Girona (UdG) at the Science Building of the UdG: "New challenges in chemistry: nanovesicles and biologic control of pests" (Jornada sobre nous reptes en química: nanovesícules i control biològic de plagues).
Many ICMAB researchers from the Solid State Chemistry group are presenting their research on novel batteries configuations and electrochemistry at the69th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) that takes places in Bologna (Italy) from 2 to 7 September 2018.
The "Societat Catalana de Química" (SCQ-IEC) organizes every year the contest on the best research chemistry projects for secondary school students (Premis als Treballs de Recerca de Batxillerat dins l'Àmbit de la Química). The award for the finalist students is a two-week scientific internship in a Catalan research center or university during July 2018.
On Wednesday, 5 September 2018, ICMAB will celebrate another edition of the Kids’ Day, the day in which staff and researchers from the institute are invited to bring their children for a morning of science activities.
This year the ICMAB hosted seven (7) students from the program "Joves i Ciència" from Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera: Roger, Pilar, Antoni, Pere, Mariona, Anastasia and Arnau.They came to our Institute to do some research stays with some of our researchers, in the fields of spintronics, solar cells, superconducting materials, porous materials for energy, sustainable chemistry and crystallography.
On July 17, 2018, the fourth edition of "Científiques a prop" (Getting closer to scientists) organized by AMIT-CAT took place with great success in La Monroe de la Filmo. This edition counted with the participation of Ana M. López-Periago, from the ICMAB, who became second in the audience award, with her talk on "CO2: hero or villain?", in which she talked about the benefits of using supercritical CO2 in the preparation of materials.
