As already announced in July 2017, on Tuesday 3rd October, Pof. Anna Roig received the Albus Award 2017, by Grifols, to develop her project on "Albumin iron-oxide nanocages". The Awards Ceremony took place at the Grifols Museum, which is located in the same building where the Grifols company started their activities, in 1940.

As we already announced, Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés Iglesias, from ICMAB, have been selected as finalists with their project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” in the XVIII Edition of "CiencIa en Acción" in the category "Science and Technology". Well, the FINAL day has arrived: tomorrow, Andrés and Guillermo will head to Izarra Centre in Ermua (Vizcaya, Basque Country) to defend their project in front of many others, from 6 to 8 October 2017.
Entitled: “Additive manufacturing ink jet printing of high temperature superconducting layers using combinatorial chemistry”
This project is part of the ERC Advanced Grant ULTRASUPERTAPE which aims to demonstrate an unprecedented approach for fabrication of low cost / high throughput / high performance High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tapes, or Coated Conductors, to push the emerging HTS industry to market.
The 18th Edition of EXPOQUIMIA, the International Chemistry Event from Fira de Barcelona, will take place on October 2-6, 2017, and will be the venue for the 10th World Congress on Chemical Engineering, the World Chemical Summit, and the PHARMAprocess forum. Campus Gutenberg, the Science Communication and Culture summer school, will take place on September 18th-19th at the Barcelona School of Management of the Universidad Pompeu Fabra.
The First Call of the COUFND Marie Skłodowska-Curie DOCtoral training programme in Functional Advanced Materials (DOC-FAM) will open on October 1st. In this call, a total of 11 fellowships are available to Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) in order to conduct a PhD in one of the research centers involved in the programme, for a total of 36 months.
ICMAB hosted on July 2017 an afternoon lecture and visit of thesummer school in physics, a bilateral exchange program for young female physicists in the transition phase to Master or PhD studies.
- Using ALBA’s synchrotron light, researchers have been able to visualise deformation (sound) waves in crystals and measured the effect on nanomagnetic elements.
- The study, published today in Nature Communications, uses the accelerators’ time structure to record time resolved images with a resolution of 80 picoseconds.
- The methodology offers a new approach for analysing dynamic strains in other research fields: nanoparticles, chemical reactions, crystallography, etc.

One manuscript from Prof. Clara Viñas and her team has been chosen to be highlighted on the ChemistryViews website. The manuscript chosen is "Small-Molecule Kinase-Inhibitors-Loaded Boron Cluster as Hybrid Agents for Glioma-Cell-Targeting Therapy", published in Chemistry-A European Journal, and already qualified as Hot Paper and Frontispiece of the journal.
ICMAB researchers lead a study on the toxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles based on the analysis of specific genetic markers linked to nanotoxicity in the C. elegans organisms.
Part of the experiment, published in the journal Nanotoxicology, has been carried out at the ALBA Synchrotron, in its infrared light MIRAS beamline. The study suggests that nanoparticles can be captured by intestinal cells in their interior, they can interact with cell lipids, and they can activate cellular mechanisms of oxidative stress.
My name is Milena Sulzbach and I am brazilian. In Brasil, I studied Physics and acquired my Bachelor's and Master's degree from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Now, I have started my PhD in ICMAB under the supervision of Prof. Fontcuberta in the Multifunctional Oxides and Complex Structures group. In my free time, I enjoy walking, listen music, reading and travelling to new places with my friends.

On Friday, September 8th, we invited our daughters, sons, and relatives, between the ages of 1 and 18, to spend one morning with us. More than 90 boys and girls participated in the interactive learning activities prepared by ICMAB volunteers, to inspire them and introduce them to our research.

BCMaterials is searching for a motivated Predoctoral Researcher for one year (extensible) research and development in Magnetorheological fluids. The research program consists in the synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) for application in magnetic fluids. The first objective of this research will be the development of novel MNP with high magnetization in the nanometric range. The second objective would be the formulation of magnetorheological fluids with great stability and high performance for dampers tuned by magnetic field.
