All you ever wanted to know about the present and future of oxide electronics, compiled in a roadmap

Mariona Coll and Josep Fontcuberta from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), Fabio Miletto Granozio from the CNR-SPIN (Complesso Universitario di Monte Sant’Angelo, Napoli, Italy) and Nini Pryds from the Department of Energy Storage and Conversion, Technical University of Denmark, have edited the compendium "Towards Oxide Electronics: a Roadmap" published recently in Applied Surface Science. The article counts with 28 contributions from 56 authors of 42 academic institutions and industries from Europe, USA and Japan. The compendium has 93 pages and includes 913 references!

New video on how to fabricate organic solar cells with thickness gradients

The Nanostructured Materials for Optoelectronics and Energy Generation (NANOPTO) group has auto-edited a video in which the process of fabrication or organic solar cells with thickness gradients is explained. This process is part of the ERC project by Mariano Campoy-Quiles "FOREMAT: Finding a needle in a haystack: Efficient identification of high performing organic energy materials".

Calcium-based batteries featured in Nature Research Chemistry Community to celebrate the #IYPT2019

The paper “Towards a calcium-based rechargeable battery” published in Nature Materials in 2016 has been featured in the interactive periodic table, associated with the element Calcium (Ca). This interactive has been put together in celebration of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT), and showcases important and interesting papers chosen by the Nature Materials editors from 150 years of original research published in Nature and the Nature Research journals. Now, a retrospective style blog post featuring the paper written by M. Rosa Palacín has been published in the Nature Reserach Chemistry Community, in the #IYPT2019 channel.

The 8th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (ICSE8) is ready to start!

This Sunday, 26 May 2019, the 8th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (ICSE8) starts at the World Trade Center, and will last until 31 May 2019. Six days devoted to the instrumentation, science and applications of spectroscopic ellipsometry and related techniques, and with a high participation of ICMAB researchers. The Conference Chair is M. Isabel Alonso, from the ICMAB-CSIC.

mNACTEC, 6-7 June 2019: "Som Elèctrics! Transició energètica i mobilitat elèctrica" wth M. Rosa Palacín

On June 6 and 7, "Som Elèctrics" will celebrate their fourth congress at the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC) in Terrassa. The event will deal with the energy transition and electrical mobility from a current and future perspective. The contents will be structured in two blocks: "Transformation and awareness" and "New systems of energy generation and consumption". The longest C-C bonds are found in the carboranes by Clara Viñas et al!

Have you ever thought if the carbon-carbon (C-C) bond distance is always the same, or it can change? And if it changes, which is the maximum distance of this kind of bond? An article published in "Chemical & Engineering News!" addressed this topic. After this article was first published, Clara Viñas contacted C&EN to let them know that even longer carbon-carbon bonds exist than the ones they mentioned: In 2002, a team including Clara Viñas described a 2.022 Å long carbon-carbon bond in an inorganic cluster (Inorg. Chem. 2002, DOI: 10.1021/ic011285z).

A research position is offered within the project "Sensoraïm: Autonomous Distributed Sensor Networks for a Smart Viticulture" funded by FEDER (Fons Europeu de Desenvolupament Regional), Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR) and Secretaria d’Universitats i Recerca del Departament d'Empresa i Coneixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya through a PRODUCTE grant in the framework of AGAUR Producte (2018 PROD 00191). The position is open starting immediately, and runs until the project finishes on 31st of October, 2020. Application deadline: 31 May, 2019.

Welcome Alba Gutierrez at ICMAB!

My name is Alba and I am from El Figaró, a small village an hour from Barcelona. I studied Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and now I am finishing a master on pharmacology. For that, I am currently doing my master's thesis at ICMAB in the Nanomol Group. As you can see in my profile photo (taken in El Camino de Santiago), I love hiking. I also like learning languages (I know a bit of italian and russian) and I play the piano and the recorder.

Congratulations, Dr. Ferran Vallès, new ICMAB graduate!

Dr. Ferran Vallès from the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) Group at ICMAB defended his PhD thesis entitled "Vortex pinning and creep in YBCO nanocomposite films grown by chemical solution deposition" on Tuesday, 7 May 2019. Ferran's supervisors were Teresa Puig and Anna Palau. Congratulations!

Hello!!
I’m Marta and I will be in Nanomol group during my TFM research. I’m from Lleida, but I carry Barcelona in my heart, too. I’m a nature lover and a sports enthusiast. I enjoy reading business books and listening to music. Here, I show you my last visit to the Monastery of Montserrat, I love its history, spirituality and magical surroundings. I absolutely like walking through its mountains while I discover and experience its spectacular and amazing views with the best company of a good friend, such as David Escalante, who doesn’t stop surprising me with the most beautiful secrets of this wonderful place.

Gerard's talk was entitled "El carboni: de l’origen de la vida a la nanociència", and is about carbon nanomaterials and their applications. Welcome Stephen Filippone at ICMAB!

Hi!! I'm a PhD student at MIT in the Materials Science department. I am spending time here under the supervision of Ignasi Fina to characterize the low temperature dielectric properties of BaZrS3 and Ba3Zr2S7.
I enjoy cooking and reading. Currently I am reading 3 books: Narcissus and Goldmund, The New Jim Crow, and Behave. I'm also a daily practitioner of yoga and meditation. Most of all I miss my bicycle.

Clara Viñas, Rosario Núñez and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Laboratory at ICMAB, and Isabel Romero, from the Universitat de Girona, co-authored the Wiley-VCH book "Smart Inorganic Polymers: Synthesis, Properties, and Emerging Applications in Materials and Life Sciences", in particular, the chapter "Highlighting the Binding Behavior of Icosahedral Boron Clusters Incorporated into Polymers: Synthons, Polymers Preparation, and Relevant Properties".

Hello!
I'm Jameel! I'm a Materials Science PhD student at UCL. I'll be working under Dr. Xavier Torrelles to train in surface X-ray diffraction data analysis for a few months. My undergraduate was at the University of Glasgow in Chemistry. I'm originally from Manchester and enjoy city cycling and cooking in my spare time.
