Postdoctoral Researcher in Organic Solar Cells in the NANOPTO group

A postdoctoral research position is offered within the framework of the project “Finding a needle in a haystack: efficient identification of high performing organic energy materials (FOREMAT)”, funded by the European Research Council through the program ERC-Consolidator Grant.

The appointment has an initial duration of 2 years, starting in May 2018.

The ICMAB presents its research at the largest Nano- European Event: ImagineNano2018

Between March 13-15, 2018, Bilbao (Spain) hosts the 4th edition of the largest European Event in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, ImagineNano2018, at Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC), a 3 days event to discuss the latest in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology.

Researchers from the ICMAB will be at ImagineNano 2018, presenting some of the latest and cutting-edge research projects, involving bacterial nanocellulose, atomic force microscopy, photonic architectures and superabsorbers. The CSIC also has an exhibitor stand, in which the research on microelectronics and nanomaterials will be presented.

Jorge Wagensberg died on Saturday 3 March 2018 in Barcelona at the age of 69. Not only the scientific community, but the whole city of Barcelona mourns the loss of this great scientist, Physics professor, humanist, poet, author of fundamental books, creator of the new CosmoCaixa in Barcelona, director of Hermitage Barcelona until his death, great friend of ICMAB's people, and much more.

SMART-4-FABRY: NANOMOL-CIBER group at ICMAB coordinates the European project focused on the Fabry rare disease

Smart-4-Fabry is a project funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program with € 5.8 M for 4 years, which aims to develop a new nanomedicine for the treatment of the Fabry rare disease.
Fabry disease is a rare disease belonging to the group of lysosomal storage disorders, with a global incidence of 1:5,000 - 1:10,000, representing a priority health problem at European level.

PLANT HEALING: Biopolymer to heal plant wounds: a collaboration between ICMAB and CRAG

Dr. Anna Laromaine, from ICMAB-CSIC, and Dr. Núria Sánchez-Coll, from CRAG (Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics) have developed an effective method for plant tissue regeneration that involves the use of a bacterial cellulose-based biopolymer. It enhances the formation of new cell layers which boosts the healing processes.

Wounds in plants can be caused by several agents like weather events (hail, wind…), predators (herbivores, insects) or humans (pruning, grafting), among others.

Ellina Kesselman

Hello, I am Ellina Kesselman, a PhD in Biochemistry. I came from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, where I work as a Microscopy Research Engineer, using Cryo- Electron Microscopy and other microscopy techniques (Atomic Force Microscopy, Light Microscopy) for supra-molecular structures imaging and investigation. I will spend 3 weeks in the laboratory of Prof. Nora Ventosa, in the Nanomol group, to learn the technology of the new GLA nanoformulation to implement it in our lab for the research purposes in the frame of the Smart-4-Fabry project. I am fond of reading, art, music, as well as of outdoor activities: travelling, hiking, snorkeling, skiing.

Hey!
My name is Helena, and I am an undergrad student from the UAB. I'm studying the double major of physics and chemistry, and I'm in my last year so I'm going to do my end-of-degree project here at ICMAB. The "Desena Trobada de Joves Investigadors dels Països Catalans" (10th Meeting of Young Researchers of the Catalan Countries) was held this year on 29-30 January 2018 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. The meeting, organized by the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ) is held every two years. This year, many ICMAB members were there to present their work and meet other chemists and researchers.

Madame Châtelet for the high school Infanta Isabel from Barcelona who visited ICMAB

On Friday, March 9 2018, one day after the International Women's Day, the students from 2n BTX of the high school Infanta Isabel in Barcelona visited our Institute.

A surprise awaited them: instead of having the usual seminar from one of our researchers, they had 12 researchers from the Institute waiting from them. But this 12 women did not give them a talk. Instead, they represented the play "Madame Châtelet and her Instagram followers".

Yannick Roselló Marín

My name is Yannick Roselló and I come from Mallorca, from the University of the Balearic Islands, Chemistry Department. I’ll be staying at ICMAB for a while to do my master final research project about cocrystallization of nitrogenated bases and their derivates under the supervision of the Crystalography Group. After my PhD in Physical Chemistry in Zurich I spent several years at the University of Cagliari in Sardinia. I came to ICMAB in October 2017 and I work in the field of computational condensed matter. Besides science I like to spend my time in nature running, climbing, hiking, sailing...

 

 

Santander, 23-27 JUL 2018: Summer School "De la nanociencia a la nanotecnología: luces y sombras del control de la materia a escala atómica"

Between 23 and 27 July 2018, the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) in Santander will host a new edition of the course "De la nanociencia a la nanotecnología: luces y sombras del control de la materia a escala atómica", coordinated by Pedro A. Serena and Agustina Asenjo from the Institue of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) and in which Anna Roig, from ICMAB, participates as lecturer.  

The course is aimed at undergraduate students (third and fourth year) and master students, in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Materials Science, Nanoscience, and Engineering, etc. in order to guide their graduate training to studies in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

YoMo 2018: ICMAB presents 3D printed structures, scientific portraits and minerals and microscopy games

On 27 and 28 February, the ICMAB was present at YoMo 2018, The Youth Mobile Festival, with an interactive stand open to all the primary and secondary school students who visited the Festival, and to all of their teachers. On Tuesday 27 February, the stand was devoted to the 3D printed structures with the 3D printing 3Doodler pens, by Andrés Gómez, from the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) lab. Both boys and girls gathered around the tables willing to build their bridge or the structure of a carbon nanotube with the 3D pens.

Seyed Mahyad Komarizadeh Asl

Hello everyone
I'm Mahyad from Iran, I did a bachelor degree in Material Engineering at AUT back in Iran and currently I'm doing a master degree at UAB (Advanced Nanoscience and Nanotechnology). Also I'm working on my master thesis under supervision of Carmen Ocal at ICMAB, working with AFM and studying the triboelectric effect. On my free time I like to hang out with friends and having fun.

The Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras from Sant Cugat visits ICMAB and learns the secret of batteries!

On Friday, 16 February, we received the visit of a class of 1st BTX students from Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras (Sant Cugat) who came to learn about "The nanomaterials of the future for energy" and, particularly, those for batteries. Dr. Dino Tonti, from the Solid State Chemistry Group, gave a talk on nanotechnology, materials for energy and focused on batteries, and on his research on lithium and sodium batteries.

Hi! I'm Agustin, and I'm a PhD student from Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is my first time in Barcelona. I’m going to be here for one month and I will learn how to characterize ferroelectric thin films with the group of Josep Fontcuberta. Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at ICMAB

During the second and third weeks of February, the ICMAB will be celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which was declared in 2016 by the United Nations to be on February, 11.

This day is being celebrated by other research centers, universities, science museums and other institutions and associations related to science, in order to raise awareness of the persistent gender gap in science, and raise the profile of the work of female scientists. The global goal of is to achieve a full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

The revolution of nanomaterials: superabsorbers that trap sunlight

ICMAB researchers have designed ultrathin materials that maximize the absorption of light in a large range of the solar spectrum. The followed strategy, low cost and fully scalable, is based on combining the thin layer deposition of semiconductors on metals, and the nanostructuring of the material forming photonic crystals. The obtained superabsorbers materials have many potential applications, especially in the field of photovoltaic energy and photodetection.
