New collaborative project between the MULFOX group and MIT, funded by “la Caixa” Foundation

Dr. Ignasi Fina has been recently awarded with a collaborative project, funded by "la Caixa" Foundation, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT-SPAIN "la Caixa" Foundation SEED FUND). The project is focused on the investigation of new materials for photovoltaic applications. The aim is to study the use of a new kind of material, called a ferroelectric semiconductor, that may offer a powerful mechanism to convert sunlight into electricity.

Valencia, 24-26 JAN 2018: Getting ready for the X edition of the GEFES meeting

The Institut Bisbe Sevilla from Calella at ICMAB learning about the nanomaterials of the future for electronics

On December 15 the Institut Bisbe Sevilla, from Calella, visited ICMAB and spent the morning with us. Marta Mas-Torrent, researcher at the NANOMOL group gave the seminar on "Nanomaterials of the future for electronics", in which she first introduced the scientific career and the concepts of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and then showed the students her research in this field.

ICMAB collaboration at the Digital CSIC journal "CSIC Abierto" about Open Access policies and mandates

The last issue (number 16) of the Digital CSIC journal "CSIC Abierto" includes two interviews with ICMAB's Documentalist and Librarian, Alejandro Santos, and with ICMAB Researcher at the NANOPTO Group, Dr. Mariano Campoy-Quiles. The interviews deal with the Open Access mandates adopted by the funding agencies and the experience at ICMAB on accomplishing these mandates.

From nanoscience to space: Xavier Obradors at the inaugural lecture of his highschool in Manresa

The physicists Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, and Ignasi Ribas, Director of the Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, IEEC), gave a joint lecture for the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Institute "Lluís de Peguera" in Manresa (26 October 2017), in which they both went as students. Their dialogue "From nanoscience to space" was followed by an enthusiast audience eager to learn.

Two projects from ICMAB researchers at the FINAL of the PRUAB Program "Generació d'Idees"

On November 30, 2017, the FINAL of the sixth edition of the "Generació d'Idees" Program, organized by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) and the "Xarxa de Referència en Biotecnologia" took place. In this year's edition, two projects from ICMAB researchers were on the final: Plant Healing, with the participation of Agnesse Rabissi, from the NN Group, and Saddle Pro, with the participation of Pablo O. Vaccaro, from the NANOPTO group.

The winning project of this year's edition was "Nanoplastics", which aims to create a biodegradable film to increase the safety of fresh food packaging and to extent the shelf life of these products. The project is formed by researchers from ICN2, CRAG and INC-UAB.

Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco FWIS 2017 for Mariona Coll and her project on new materials for photovoltaics

As we already announced on July 2017, Mariona Coll, researcher at the Institute of Materials Science (ICMAB) in the SUMAN group, has been awarded with the Research Award L'Oréal-Unesco "For Women in Science" 2017. The awards ceremony took place this last Wednesday, 22 November, in Madrid. Mariona will receive 15.000 € that will be invested in her research project which "can contribute to one of the most important challenges of this century: find a new energy system for the production of clean energy".

ICMAB Researcher, Dr. Enric Canadell, elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB)

On December 2017, Dr. Enric Canadell, Research Professor at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), became elected member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB). Two other researchers from CSIC, Dr. Xavier Querol (IDAEA-CSIC), and Dr. Francesc Piferrer (ICM-CSIC) were also elected, together with Dra. Fàtima Bosch (UAB) and Dr. Roderic Guigó (CRG). Finally, Dra. Fabiola Gianotti (CERN) was elected as correspondent member.

Hello!
My name is Karen Lizzette Velásquez Méndez. I have a BSc in Chemistry from the National University of Colombia. Now, I'm a student of the Oficial Master in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine in the UAB.
In the ICMAB, I'm working in the Solid State Chemistry Research Group in the proyect "Synthesis and electronic properties of perovskite type oxynitrides" led by Dra. Amparo Fuertes. I like to meet new places and read in my free time.

 

 

ICMAB within the Top 10 Institutions in Barcelona according to Nature Index 2017 Science Cities

The Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) is the 7th Top Institution in Barcelona, according to the Nature Index 2017 Science Cities.

This current 12-month Index, corresponding to year 2016, shows Barcelona's leading institutions for high-quality science ordered by the number of articles published (AC) in a list of science journals, and the number of authors of each institution, considering the percentage of authorship in each article (WFC) (with the correction of the centers dedicated to space science, which have a lot of coauthrs in the articles).

19 DEC: Christmas Lecture at ICMAB: "Re-reading Curie" by Xavier Roqué

This year, to celebrate Christmas, on Tuesday, December 19, we will have with us Xavier Roqué, Senior Lecturer in History of Science at UAB and member of the Phylosophy Dept. and of the Center for the History of Science (UAB). Xavier will give a Christmas Lecture entitled "Re-reading Curie", in which he will suggest new readings of, probably, the best-known woman scientist of the twentieth century: Marie Skłodowska Curie

After the seminar, there will be the traditional Christmas Concert by the ICMAB choir and the Christmas Buffet for all our staff.

Becoming a Materials Detective for a day: interactive school visits at ICMAB

Within the program "El CSIC a l'aula", and the "Program of school activities from the Barcelona City Council" (PAE), the ICMAB opens its doors to Primary School students for the first time, and welcomes 10-11 years-old kids to visit their installations. One of the most successful activities proposed is the one called "Converteix-te en un detectiu de materials"(Become a materials detective).

Spinning the future

The August 2017 edition of the Research*EU magazine featured an interesting overview of the ACMOL project, which is working to develop graphene-based spintronics for next-gen molecular electronic devices. This article held that ‘Spintronics, molecular electronics and graphene have a common trait: they are all considered as key enablers in the future of computing beyond the limitations of Moore’s and Kryder’s laws. The ACMOL project is contributing to their joint advancement with proof-of-concept devices.’
