Clara Viñas, Rosario Núñez and Francesc Teixidor, from the Inorganic Materials and Catalysis Laboratory at ICMAB, and Isabel Romero, from the Universitat de Girona, co-authored the Wiley-VCH book "Smart Inorganic Polymers: Synthesis, Properties, and Emerging Applications in Materials and Life Sciences", in particular, the chapter "Highlighting the Binding Behavior of Icosahedral Boron Clusters Incorporated into Polymers: Synthons, Polymers Preparation, and Relevant Properties".

A new protocol from Gervasi Herranz and the MULFOX group at ICMAB shows how magnetic fields can change the propagation of light in confined nanostructured materials and reveal enhanced optical responses. This new protocol is published as a VIDEO-ARTICLE at the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). The new protocol allows to directly study how magnetization changes the photonic response.

All you ever wanted to know about the present and future of oxide electronics, compiled in a roadmap

Mariona Coll and Josep Fontcuberta from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), Fabio Miletto Granozio from the CNR-SPIN (Complesso Universitario di Monte Sant’Angelo, Napoli, Italy) and Nini Pryds from the Department of Energy Storage and Conversion, Technical University of Denmark, have edited the compendium "Towards Oxide Electronics: a Roadmap" published recently in Applied Surface Science. The article counts with 28 contributions from 56 authors of 42 academic institutions and industries from Europe, USA and Japan. The compendium has 93 pages and includes 913 references!

Prof. Clara Viñas is one of the co-editors of the book, together with Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins (Leipzig University).

In additon, both Prof. Clara Viñas and Prof. Francesc Teixidor have contributed to the book with a chapter on "Cobaltabisdicarbollide‐based Synthetic Vesicles: From Biological Interaction to in vivo Imaging"

Els carborans (compostos formats per àtoms de carboni i bor) presenten un ampli ventall d'aplicacions. A medicina, han mostrat gran interés a la teràpia contra el càncer, denominada teràpia de captura de neutrons per bor (BNCT). En aquest treball de recerca s'ha preparat una sèrie de molècules d'alt contingut en bor i derivats del closo-carborà que presenten una sorprenent propietat: la fluorescència. Aquests dendrons són potencialment interessants per a la seva aplicació en BNCT i medicina.

En el año 1910 se preparan los primeros hidruros de boro. Se descubre, entonces, que estos compuestos desprenden una gran cantidad de calor al arder y se piensa que podrían ser utilizados como combustible si se preparan en gran cantidad. Es en el año 1946, finalizada la II Guerra Mundial, cuando se crea un Proyecto para esta finalidad: prepararlos en cantidades comerciales para utilizarlos como combustibles para cohetes.

MATHEROES, or how to make materials science appealing, in Material-ES

As scientific developments get more and more complex, the challenge of communicating any innovation increases. Despite the increasing amount of applications of new materials in day to day life, explaining how they work is not an easy task, especially with younger people, who might not see any of the more advanced concepts in their science classes. Anna May Masnou, Head of the Communication Department at the ICMAB, has written an article at the SOCIEMAT magazine Material-ES about the MATHEROES initiative, which personalizes material properties into superheroes.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2019: a close look from an ICMAB point of view (by M. Rosa Palacín and Josep Fontcuberta)

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2019 was awarded on October 9, 2019, jointly to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for the development of lithium-ion batteries. At the ICMAB we are very happy for this award, for several reasons: Josep Fontcuberta was a former postdoc fellow of Goodenough, in Oxford; and Goodenough was once a member of our Scientific Advisory Board! Moreover, M. Rosa Palacín, researcher in the batteries field, has met all three of them, and has continued their work, developing post lithium-ion batteries at the ICMAB! Published a review on thermoelectric materials, from the very beginning and to the future!

A broad and comprehensive review on thermoelectric materials has been published in "Materials Science and Engineering: R: Reports", a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Elsevier established in 1993 with an impact factor of more than 25! The review, with 47 pages, includes the participation of Mariano Campoy-Quiles and Bernhard Dörling from the ICMAB-CSIC, and 12 more institutions around the world (Italy, USA, UK, Germany, Sweden and Spain). 

Susagna Ricart participates in a project that unites Art and Science: NANOCAEDRE

The Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC), together with many research centers and universities, including the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), have initiated an art project that will represent in a different way thw world of nanotechnology: NANOCAEDRE. Susagna Ricart, from the ICMAB, participates in this project with her expertise in the superconducting phenomena. The presentation of the project will take place at the Basilica Sants Màrtirs Just i Pastor (Barcelona), on Tuesday, 10 December, at 7 pm.

The ACS Omega Virtual Issue "Women at the Forefront of Chemistry" features two articles led by ICMAB women

Th article published in the Open Access journal ACS Omega "On the Study of Ca and Mg Deintercalation from Ternary Tantalum Nitrides" by M. Rosa Palacín, Amparo Fuertes et al. and the article "Role of Polymorphism and Thin-Film Morphology in Organic Semiconductors Processed by Solution Shearing" by Marta Mas-Torrent et al. have been selected for the the journal's first-ever Virtual Issue "Women at the Forefront of Chemistry". El espín es una propiedad intrínseca de los electrones, como lo pueda ser la carga, que está relacionado con el magnetismo de los materiales. En dispositivos de estado sólido convencionales (como diodos, transistores, etc), se hace uso principalmente de la carga, que es manipulada, almacenada o transmitida en los diversos elementos que componen el dispositivo.

La electrónica convencional está basada en transistores y diodos; en estos dispositivos la carga eléctrica fluye entre una entrada y una salida y nuestra capacidad de controlar el flujo de carga mediante la aplicación de campos eléctricos (la tensión) les confiere la funcionalidad que explotamos en los componentes electrónicos. Los electrones del material son los portadores de carga eléctrica.

Turning Microscopic Images into 3D Printable Files

Researchers from the Institute of Material Science of Barcelona – ICMAB – have come up with a simple way to convert nanoscale 3D scans captured using atomic force microscopy into full-sized 3D printable models. They’ve published the process on an easy to follow tutorial using common 3D printing software like Blender and Slic3r.

Two articles made-in-ICMAB at the SCQ journal: magnetic reduced graphene oxide and Smart-4-Fabry project

The last issue of the journal of the Catalan Chemical Society (Revista de la Societat Catalana de Química) includes two articles from ICMAB researchers. The first one is about graphene oxide nanocomposites decorated with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, and the second one is about the European project "Smart-4-Fabry", which develops a new nanomedicine for the treatment of the Fabry disease. The articles are written in Catalan. We encourage you to have a look at them!

Utilización de la tecnología de fluidos supercríticos para la impregnación de biomateriales con fármacos

Los medios tradicionales de administración de medicamentos proveen una concentración pulsátil de fármaco en el plasma sanguíneo, de forma que los niveles de agente activo crecen rápidamente y luego decaen a medida que el fármaco es excretado o metabolizado. Utilizando dosis simples, el tiempo durante el cual la concentración de principio activo está por encima de del nivel efectivo mínimo puede extenderse aumentando la cantidad administrada.
