COVID-19 Project Calls for researchers

Since the coronavirus outbreak in Spain, in February-March 2020, many of the research funding agencies, the European Commission, and private institutions have opened research project calls to face the COVID-19. Here we have collected some of this calls. Feel free to contact us if you think some of the important calls are missing.

Francesco Silvestri

Hi everyone!
My name is Francesco, I am from Roma where I got both my Bachelor and Master in Materials Science. I am now doing my PhD in the group of Esther Barrena and my work will be dealing with the nano-scale morphology and structure of organic thin films for photovoltaics.
Happy to join you at ICMAB!

Highly sensitive and flexible organic X-ray detectors

Organic electronic devices with an X-ray sensitivity competitive with the inorganic devices in the market are developed at the Nanomol group at the ICMAB, by Marta Mas-Torrent et al. and published today, May 1, 2020, in Nature Communications.

Mariano Campoy-Quiles becomes finalist for a contest with the project SENSORAÏM

The “Idees Innovadores Isabel P. Trabal” award is organised by the Caixa d’Enginyers and is looking for scientific enterprises to boost the development of technological and innovative projects with a focus on engineering and sustainability. The SENSORAÏM project, born at ICMAB, is now eligible for a 10.000 € grant.

Nanoneedles to increase the capacity and robustness of digital memories

Researchers at the ICMAB, UAB and the ALBA Synchrotron, in collaboration with the UB and ICN2, have developed a new technique to locally modify the properties of a metamagnetic material. The method consists in applying local pressure to the surface of the material using nanometric needles and allows a much more easy and local modification than current methods. The research opens the door to a more accurate and precise control of magnetic materials and allows to improve the architecture and capacity of magnetic digital memories.

New FASTGRID video to explain the objectives of the project

The FASTGRID project, in which the SUMAN group at ICMAB participates, has released a new video, shot in the premises of one of the partners (SuperGrid Institute, France) to explain in simple terms and with animations the objectives of the project. The video includes footage from the production line of the German industrial partner THEVA and from the winding process made by the French company Sigmaphi in collaboration with the SuperGrid Institute.

Polarity-Driven Polytypic Branching in Cu-Based Quaternary Chalcogenide Nanostructures

An appropriate way of realizing property nanoengineering in complex quaternary chalcogenide nanocrystals is presented for Cu2CdxSnSey(CCTSe) polypods. The pivotal role of the polarity in determining morphology, growth, and polytypic branching mechanism is demonstrated. Polarity is considered to be responsible for the formation of an initial seed that takes the form of a tetrahedron with four cation-polar facets.

Salvador Ferrer, honored with the "All a devoted career" ASEVA award

The Spanish Vacuum Society (ASEVA) has awarded Prof. Salvador Ferrer Fábregas for his contributions to the study of the surfaces properties and the development of characterization experimental techniques as well as the creation and operation of the ALBA Synchrotron. Salvador Ferrer, now Associate Science Advisor at ALBA, was an ICMAB-CSIC researcher for one year (2011-2012). During his time with us he always tried to establish synergies between the ICMAB and the ALBA Synchrtron. His seed has grown and now we can say that there are many collaborative branches between the two institutions.

Six-year old "scientists" from Sabadell enjoy the visit at ICMAB!

On Tuesday, 27 November 2018, we had a very special visit in our Institute: "the scientists" class formed by 24 six-year old students from "La Trama" school in Sabadell visited us. It was a fantastic visit. All the kids were very happy to become real scientists for a day, and to visit the laboratories, the clean room, the glove boxes, the microscopes and even to perform an X-ray diffraction experiment to discover what is sand made of.

Stop the pandemic: Safety and health at work can save lives

Today, 28 April 2020, is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Recognizing the great challenge that governments, employers, workers and whole societies are facing worldwide to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will focus on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, in particular, on the COVID-19 pandemic. At the ICMAB we take this job very seriously, and the Health and Safety Committee, with the help and compromise of all of us, will ensure that we will all have a safe return to our work.
