The channel, a project led by ICN2, features also some research made in ICMAB.

"What the Fisica" or #WTF is a new science Youtube channel in Spanish that offers a broad view about top research performed at ICN2 and neighbouring centres such as ICMAB, IFAE and IMB-CNM-CSIC. 

The UAB supports this channel not only by sharing content but also offering a space for the video recording.

Molecular Gate in RNE "A hombros de gigantes"

Mariano Campoy-Quiles and Anna May Masnou explain the new ICMAB-CSIC spin off to Manuel Seara.

On Sunday, 24 April 2022, the spin off Molecular Gate S.L. was featured in the radio programme "A hombros de gigantes", by Manuel Seara.

Anna May Masnou, Communication Officer at ICMAB, and Mariano Campoy-Quiles, researcher and co-founder of the spin off (together with Alexander Perevedentsev, and with BeAble Capital), explained the basics of this new spin off, which intends to provide a range of unique and cost-effective security solutions for the pharmaceutical market.

The patented technology will help to verify the authenticity of products and ensure their proper handling during storage and transportation.

The aim of the quality certification obtained is to ensure the quality of the service provided and to continue with its improvement and extension to future services.

The Scientific and Technical Service for the characterization of nano and biomaterials, the Soft Lab, run by the Nanomol Research Unit of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB, CSIC), and which is part of Unit 6 of the ICTS Nanbiosis, and CIBER-BBN, aims to offer characterization services of micro- and nanostructured soft molecular materials to the entire scientific community that requires them.

Colloidal inks for superconducting materials growth

A new technology to manufacture superconductors will enter the Lab to Market (L2M) XRE4S program

The technology was presented by the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostructures (SUMAN) group, led by Teresa Puig. 

The technology "Colloidal inks for superconductors (HTS-INKS)" has been accepted to participate in the next Lab to Market (L2M) program organized by the Energy for Society Network (XRE4S) as announced on 16 March 2022.

The L2M program is a technology transfer and valorization program to boost the impact of energy technology transfer to the industry in Catalonia. In this third edition of the L2M program, the XRE4S experts committee has selected eight technologies from IREC, UPC, UdG and ICMAB-CSIC to take part in the program.

The ALBA Synchrotron begins construction of a new beamline: 3Sbar

ICMAB Researcher Xavier Torrelles has collaborated in the design process of the new beamline installation.

ALBA Synchrotron, a 3rd generation synchrotron light facility that allows for the visualization of the atomic structure of matter as well as the study of its properties, will open its newest beamline, 3Sbar, by 2026:

"Each new beamline opens new windows in understanding the complexity of the world around us. With 3Sbar, ALBA aims to be at the fore-front of catalysis science, building a unique scientific instrument with strong capabilities for preserving our environment", says Caterina Biscari, director of the ALBA Synchrotron.

The ESTORE project aims to innovate the energy storage in supercapacitors

The project comes from the collaboration of ICMAB Researchers and groups from the UAB and UB.

13 ICMAB researchers in the Stanford ranking of most highly cited scientists

Up to 523 CSIC scientists are in the ranking, 82 of them from centers in Catalonia.

ICMAB researchers in this ranking are working in the fields of sustainable batteries, oxide electronics, electronic and crystallographic structure of materials, flexoelectricity, borane-based materials, molecular materials, nitride-based materials, photovoltaics and thermoelectrics, among others.

ICMAB joins the 7th edition of the Science by Women programme

A senior African women researcher will develop a research project during a 6-month stay at ICMAB. 

The Fundación Mujeres por África (FMxA)(Women for Africa Foundation) is partnering with the Spanish ‘Severo Ochoa’ and other Centers of Excellence to bring the Science by Women programme to fruition. The project intends to host women researchers from African countries, so they can benefit from these research internships to promote and lead the scientific innovation that contributes to tackling the great challenges faced by African countries through research in health and biomedicine, sustainable agriculture and food security, water, energy and climate change.

M. Rosa Palacín awarded with the International Battery Association (IBA) Research Award

The ICMAB Deputy Director and Researcher, M. Rosa Palacín, receives this award for her significant contributions to battery research. Plasmons to harness typically wasted infrared solar light

The project PLASMIONICO is featured at the Project Repository Journal. PLASMIONICO is a European MSCA project, carried out by ICMAB researchers Alejandro Goñi (PI) and Luis A. Pérez, that aims to advance in the sustainable produciton of electricity by harnessing near infrared (NIR) solar light, which is typically wasted in conventional solar cells.

The 2021 ICMAB Summer Party celebrates the Institute’s 35 years!

After last year’s party being cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, we were stoked to be able to finally celebrate again!

The 2021 ICMAB Party was celebrated after more than a year without live events due to the collective efforts to stop the spread of COVID. The party was not without changes, as it was celebrated entirely at ICMAB’s terrace to avoid concentrations of people inside. We celebrated on 16 July 2021 with many events, including the first CRYSTALMATCH contest, the awards ceremony for the FOTICMAB contest, the BEFORE&NOW photo activity, a tie dye workshop by Sara Ruiz, Nerea González and Lídia Ballell, a sketching workshop by Alejandro Santos, and the final of the Tennis Table tournament!

ICMAB Celebrates its 35th anniversary!

The Institute was one of the four Materials Science CSIC Research Centers founded in 1986.

This year is the 35th anniversary of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona! It was put together in 1986 through the union of different research groups from different local institutions, all coming together in a singular building which was, on its own, a collaboration between the CSIC and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, who conceded some of its territory so the ICMAB could be built near the Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica (the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM)).

A study published in Science Advances reports on the unexpected observation of thermal waves in germanium, a semiconductor material. This phenomenon may allow a significant improvement in the performance of our electronic devices in a near future. The study is led by researchers from the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB, CSIC) in collaboration with researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the University of Cagliari.
