13 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral positions in the first DocFam+ call

On 15 May 2023, the first call for doctoral contracts within the DocFam+ (Doctoral training programme in Functional Advanced Materials) MSCA-COFUND coordinated by ICMAB-CSIC will open. 

DocFam+ is a 5-year doctoral training programme in Functional Advanced Materials presented by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and coordinated through the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) in collaboration with several partner research institutions from the region, six of them contributing to the co-funding of the programme: Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC), Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), High Energy Physics Institute (IFAE), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and ALBA Synchrotron.

Eulàlia Pujades, Sergi Riera and Miquel Casadement at the awards ceremony

New project on organic photovoltaics on Barcelona's bus stops

Sergi Riera-Galindo, ICMAB researcher, is the IP of this project awarded by the Barcelona City Council to young and emerging research projects. 

The ceremony was held on Monday, 20 March at the Barcelona City Council (at the Saló de Cent) and a diploma was given to each researcher of the eighteen winning projects.  

Sergi Riera's project is titled "Bus stop integrated organic photovoltaics (TERRA)" and is granted with 60,000 €. The project aims to integrate stable organic photovoltaics mini-modules on bus stops to power light devices for a future smart city.

Three new MSCA PF will continue their research carrer at ICMAB

Muhammad Ahsan Saeed will work on indoor organic photovoltaics, Silvia Damerio on spintronic devices and Daniel Martin on organic electronic devices. 

The Marie Sklodowska Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) 2022 call results were announced by the European Commission in February 2023. The call will facilitate the incorporation of 1,235 experienced postdoctoral researchers to R+D institutions (research centers, universities, private and public organisation and small and medium-sized enterprises), 177of them in Spain, 31 of them at the CSIC, and 3 of them here at ICMAB.

New electron microscope centre to advance in research into structural biology and new materials

  • This cutting-edge facility will house two high-end electron microscopes: one to determine the structure of large protein complexes and another to study materials at atomic level.
  • Created thanks to the joint effort of several research institutes, the centre is located at the ALBA Synchrotron and will be open to the entire scientific community.
  • Catalan Research and Universities Minister Joaquim Nadal inaugurates the centre, which has received funding from the Catalan Government’s ERDF programme, on 24 February.

DOCFAM+: New MSCA-COFUND doctoral programme led by ICMAB-CSIC to train 26 young researchers

DOCFAM+ (DOCtoral training programme in Functional Advanced Materials: Towards a Better Future) is a new doctoral programme for the recruitment and training of 26 excellent doctoral researchers. It builds on the success and remarkable outcomes from the previous DOCFAM programme by providing a new dimension through highly interdisciplinary and intersectorial research. The programme is led by ICMAB-CSIC and includes 6 partner organizations of the Barcelona area.

A new european infrastructure will facilitate the transfer of nano-pharmaceuticals from the lab to the clinic

Launch of the cross-european PHOENIX project, which will provide a new infrastructure available to research laboratories, SMEs and start-ups to facilitate the transfer of nano-pharmaceuticals from the laboratory to clinical practice. PHOENIX will have a duration of 4 years and a total budget of 14.45 million euros. Two CSIC Institutes, ICMAB (CSIC) and INMA (CSIC-UNIZAR), and one CSIC spin-off, Nanomol Technologies, participate in the project.

The ICMAB receives one ERC Starting Grant researcher who will explore magnetic insulators for future spintronics

Can Onur Avci, currently postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich, will join the ICMAB to develop cutting-edge device concepts and explore new physics for future spintronics applications using magnetic insulators. In total, 436 laureates of the 2020 European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants competition will be able to tackle big scientific questions at universities and research centres across Europe. The grants are part of the EU's research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020.

The ICMAB receives one ERC Proof of Concept grant to develop organic thermoelectric based self-powered sensors

Mariano Campoy-Quiles, researcher at the Nanostructured Materials for Optoelectronics and Energy Harvesting (NANOPTO) group has been granted with an ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) to advance in the development of organic thermoelectric generators to power low-cost sensors for vineyards. Fifty-five grantees of the European Research Council (ERC) have been awarded Proof of Concept funding to explore the commercial or societal potential of their research results. The grants are part of the EU's research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020.

Meet the Early Stage Researchers of the SEPOMO MSCA-ITN project

The SEPOMO project (Spins for Efficient Photovoltaic Devices based on Organic Molecules), supported and co-funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN Programme (MSCA-ITN-2016 - Innovative Training Networks), has been "Training the next generation of photovoltaic researchers" since November 2016.
