Jorge Wagensberg died on Saturday 3 March 2018 in Barcelona at the age of 69. Not only the scientific community, but the whole city of Barcelona mourns the loss of this great scientist, Physics professor, humanist, poet, author of fundamental books, creator of the new CosmoCaixa in Barcelona, director of Hermitage Barcelona until his death, great friend of ICMAB's people, and much more.

The 6th International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association Conference (ISHA2018) will be held on August 8-12, 2018 in Sendai Japan. This conference will cover wide-variety topics on solvothermal and hydrothermal research, as well as some topics including food science, waste disposal, characterization techniques, origin of life, mathematics and simulation.
Between 23 and 27 July 2018, the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) in Santander will host a new edition of the course "De la nanociencia a la nanotecnología: luces y sombras del control de la materia a escala atómica", coordinated by Pedro A. Serena and Agustina Asenjo from the Institue of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) and in which Anna Roig, from ICMAB, participates as lecturer.
The course is aimed at undergraduate students (third and fourth year) and master students, in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Materials Science, Nanoscience, and Engineering, etc. in order to guide their graduate training to studies in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
The 20th edition of the ICSNN (International Conference on Superlattices, Nanostructures and Nanodevices) will take place this year in Madrid between 23 and 27 July 2018. The ICSNN is a biennial conference series with a tradition lasting back to the 1980s, usually being the largest satellite conference to the International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors (ICPS). The ICPS will be held in Montpellier (France) the week after ICSNN.

On 27 and 28 February, the ICMAB was present at YoMo 2018, The Youth Mobile Festival, with an interactive stand open to all the primary and secondary school students who visited the Festival, and to all of their teachers. On Tuesday 27 February, the stand was devoted to the 3D printed structures with the 3D printing 3Doodler pens, by Andrés Gómez, from the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) lab. Both boys and girls gathered around the tables willing to build their bridge or the structure of a carbon nanotube with the 3D pens.

In the framework of the NFFA-Europe project, in which ICMAB is partner, the second NFFA Summer School devoted to "Nanoscience Foundries and Fine Analysis (NFFA), available instruments and techniques" will take place at the Basovizza Campus in Trieste, Italy, on July 9-13, 2018. The first edition was in Barcelona in 2016.

On Friday 16 February, the secondary school teachers enrolled in the "Physics and Chemistry Permanent Seminars" organized by Miquel Calvet and Fina Guitart from the CESIRE* (Centre de Recursos Pedagògics Específics de Suport a la Innovació i la Recerca Educativa), came for an afternoon at ICMAB.
On Friday, 16 February, we received the visit of a class of 1st BTX students from Institut Joaquima Pla i Farreras (Sant Cugat) who came to learn about "The nanomaterials of the future for energy" and, particularly, those for batteries. Dr. Dino Tonti, from the Solid State Chemistry Group, gave a talk on nanotechnology, materials for energy and focused on batteries, and on his research on lithium and sodium batteries.

Hello, I am Ellina Kesselman, a PhD in Biochemistry. I came from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, where I work as a Microscopy Research Engineer, using Cryo- Electron Microscopy and other microscopy techniques (Atomic Force Microscopy, Light Microscopy) for supra-molecular structures imaging and investigation. I will spend 3 weeks in the laboratory of Prof. Nora Ventosa, in the Nanomol group, to learn the technology of the new GLA nanoformulation to implement it in our lab for the research purposes in the frame of the Smart-4-Fabry project. I am fond of reading, art, music, as well as of outdoor activities: travelling, hiking, snorkeling, skiing.

Today we started to celebrate some of the events for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We had a seminar at 12 pm from Montse Ribell on Mileva Mariç, a great women eclipsed by a great man, Albert Einstein, and who left her studies in physics and maths for him.
After the seminar, we took a group photo of the women at ICMAB, but also of the men... Why?

My name is Helena, and I am an undergrad student from the UAB. I'm studying the double major of physics and chemistry, and I'm in my last year so I'm going to do my end-of-degree project here at ICMAB. I hope to learn a lot about materials and its characteristics, as well as learning how to work in a research lab.
During the second and third weeks of February, the ICMAB will be celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which was declared in 2016 by the United Nations to be on February, 11.
This day is being celebrated by other research centers, universities, science museums and other institutions and associations related to science, in order to raise awareness of the persistent gender gap in science, and raise the profile of the work of female scientists. The global goal of is to achieve a full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls, and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
The "Desena Trobada de Joves Investigadors dels Països Catalans" (10th Meeting of Young Researchers of the Catalan Countries) was held this year on 29-30 January 2018 at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in Barcelona. The meeting, organized by the Societat Catalana de Química (SCQ) is held every two years. This year, many ICMAB members were there to present their work and meet other chemists and researchers.

ICMAB researchers have designed ultrathin materials that maximize the absorption of light in a large range of the solar spectrum. The followed strategy, low cost and fully scalable, is based on combining the thin layer deposition of semiconductors on metals, and the nanostructuring of the material forming photonic crystals. The obtained superabsorbers materials have many potential applications, especially in the field of photovoltaic energy and photodetection.
