Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director and Researcher at the Superconducting Materials and Large Scale Nanostrucures (SUMAN) Group, participated in a roundtable "from Lab to Fab" at an ICN2 Severo Ochoa Workshop in June 2017. The roundtable discussion was chaired by ICN2 Business Development Officer, Nadia Pons.
The 3rd Face to Face Project Meeting for FASTGRID is being held on the 19-20 October 2017 at the UAB Campus. The meeting is organized by KIT in Karlsruhe and hosted by ICMAB, in Barcelona. The project meeting starts at 12.00 pm on Thursday with a lab tour of ICMAB, followed by the individual partner presentations as well as status report by the project coordinator, Pascal Tixador from CNRS, at 2 pm at Hotel Campus, Bellaterra.
On the afternoon of October 18, 2017, the 41 research centers and units recognised by the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu certificate of excellence formalized the creation of the Excellence Alliance (SOMMa) during its first formal meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of State in R+D+i, Carmen Vela. The main objective of the Alliance is to internationally promote and strengthen the centers and units accredited for their excellence, and enhance the visibility of their research.
Hello! My name is Zsolt Kelemen. I did my PhD in Hungary and have joined at the Laboratory of Inorganic Materials as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow under supervision of Prof. Clara Viñas. My research interests include chemistry of low-valent compounds, ferrocene-containing systems and ionic liquids. My current project is to tune both the photoluminescence and conductive properties of new COP materials.
According to EcoDiario.es, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB) increased from 170 to 202 employees from 30 November 2011 to 31 July 2017, which represents an increase of nearly 19 %.
This Friday we had the visit of more than 25 students from IES Consell de Cent (Barcelona), who joined the ESCOLAB programme to visit universities and research centers in Catalonia.

On October 6th, the Retirement Reception honoring Prof. Vladimir Laukhin, "Volodya", took place at the Sala d'Actes Carles Miravitlles of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB), where he has been working during the last 20 years.
As already announced in July 2017, on Tuesday 3rd October, Pof. Anna Roig received the Albus Award 2017, by Grifols, to develop her project on "Albumin iron-oxide nanocages". The Awards Ceremony took place at the Grifols Museum, which is located in the same building where the Grifols company started their activities, in 1940.
As we already announced, Andrés Gómez and Guillermo de Andrés Iglesias, from ICMAB, have been selected as finalists with their project “BRIDG3D: Imprimiendo puentes en 3D” in the XVIII Edition of "CiencIa en Acción" in the category "Science and Technology". Well, the FINAL day has arrived: tomorrow, Andrés and Guillermo will head to Izarra Centre in Ermua (Vizcaya, Basque Country) to defend their project in front of many others, from 6 to 8 October 2017.

My name is Milena Sulzbach and I am brazilian. In Brasil, I studied Physics and acquired my Bachelor's and Master's degree from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Now, I have started my PhD in ICMAB under the supervision of Prof. Fontcuberta in the Multifunctional Oxides and Complex Structures group. In my free time, I enjoy walking, listen music, reading and travelling to new places with my friends.

The 18th Edition of EXPOQUIMIA, the International Chemistry Event from Fira de Barcelona, will take place on October 2-6, 2017, and will be the venue for the 10th World Congress on Chemical Engineering, the World Chemical Summit, and the PHARMAprocess forum. It will also host the exhibition Smart Chemistry, Smart Future, and the Industrial Biotech forum, and the IN(3D)USTRY, EQUIPLAST and EURSURFAS events.
This post features one of the articles published at CORDIS about the EUROTAPES project, which main goal is to develop superconducting tapes to improve energy efficiency in Europe. The SUMAN group, here at ICMAB, has actively participated in this European project, in a consortium that consists of 20 partners from 8 member states - 6 universities, 6 institutes, 1 technological center and 8 industrial companies.
The Catalan universities and research centers have rejected the intervention of the public accounts by the Spanish Ministry of Finance and have denounced that this measure violates the principle of university autonomy.

Dr. Blai Casals Montserrat has defended his PhD thesis, entitled "Magneto-optical spectroscopy and domain imaging of functional oxides" on Friday, September 15th, at 11 am. The ICMAB Sala d'actes Carles Miravitlles was not big enough to fit all the people, including ICMAB colleagues, friends and family, who attented the PhD defense!
This year, a group of Communication Officers of various research centers and scientific institutions, including ICMAB, will participate in a workshop at Campus Gutenberg, the summer school on Science Communication and Culture, in Barcelona, on September 18th.
