Principal Beamline Scientist position at Diamond Light Source, UK

Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron, is looking for a Principal Beamline Scientist for the Microfocus Spectroscopy beamline at Diamond, I18. The successful candidate would be responsible for a polarised soft X-ray facility dedicated to X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism spectroscopy and imaging.

I18 is a mature beamline that started operation in January 2007, and has been receiving users regularly since then. The beamline is an integral component of the Diamond Spectroscopy Group, together with B18, a quick scanning multi-purpose XAS beamline, I20-Scanning, a high intensity beamline for XAS of dilute samples and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy, and I20-EDE, a fast EXAFS beamline working in dispersive configuration. I18 is a hard X-ray microprobe that produces a micron-scale X-ray beam over the energy range from 2 to 20.6 keV. Three main techniques are used in a routine manner to perform 2 and 3 D imaging: X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction. The beamline has an active user community covering many scientific disciplines ranging from bio-medical imaging to the study of extra-planetary matter.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a large user base of scientists in diverse research fields: chemistry and catalysis, environmental science, biological sciences, etc. They will also be expected to work in collaboration with the other scientists within the Spectroscopy Group to support the development of common interests and projects. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct their own internationally leading research programme at Diamond and at other facilities. The successful candidate will manage a team of beamline scientists and technical staff to support user operations and will lead the beamline’s instrumentation development programme. In addition, they will be expected to support the Spectroscopy Science Group Leader in developing and implementing the long-term strategy for the beamline and equipment, including preparation laboratories. Our expectation is that the research programme of the selected candidate will be well matched to the capabilities of the beamline. They should have broad experience in spectroscopy techniques such as XRF, XANES and EXAFS, and an international reputation in the field. The candidate should also have demonstrated experience in providing leadership and management for a team of scientists and technicians.

Why Diamond?

Diamond is one of the UK's leading research institutions, enabling scientific breakthroughs in many disciplines. Being a part of the Diamond team allows our staff to shape some of the most important and exciting scientific projects being undertaken anywhere in the UK.
