Abstract

Organic solar cells (OSCs) hold tremendous promise as sustainable energy harvesting devices, offering advantages such as flexibility, lightweight, and potential for low-cost manufacturing. However, their widespread adoption hinges on addressing key challenges, particularly in stability and efficiency. In this seminar, we provide a comprehensive overview of the field of organic solar cells, highlighting their significance in renewable energy technologies. We discuss the fundamentals of OSCs, their advantages, and the challenges they face. Our research focuses on developing stable and efficient OSCs for various applications, with a particular emphasis on the integration of OSC modules into greenhouses and indoor environments. Through optimization of donor:acceptor polymer blends, investigation of non-fullerene acceptors, exploration of low synthetic complexity ink formulations, and tuning of donor polymer molecular weight, we aim to advance the field towards practical implementation. Our findings shed light on strategies to enhance the stability and efficiency of OSCs, paving the way for their integration into real-world applications and contributing to the transition towards a sustainable energy future.

Short bio

Dr. Sergi Riera-Galindo earned his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and a Master's in Energy from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 2015 and 2013 respectively, after graduating as an industrial engineer from the same university in 2009.

Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Riera-Galindo gained further expertise during a postdoctoral position at the Institute of Materials Science in Barcelona, where he researched high-performance printed transistors. In 2018, he relocated to the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University in Sweden, conducting research on doped polymers for organic thermoelectric generators. Subsequently, he worked as a research engineer on a proof-of-concept project with Epishine AB, developing polymer-based photovoltaic modules for integration into buildings from 2020 to 2021.

In 2021, Dr. Sergi Riera-Galindo returned to the Institute of Materials Science in Barcelona as a Beatriu de Pinós Fellow to investigate doping strategies for high-performance organic transistors. Currently, he is a postdoctoral fellow with an individual MSCA fellowship, focusing his research on the stability of organic solar cells.
