Sustainability

Sustainability Committee

The ICMAB Sustainability Committee was established in May 2023 with the goal of reducing the institute's environmental impact across all areas of activity.

It currently consists of 16 members divided into 4 working groups:

  • Outreach
  • Resources Quantification
  • Waste Management
  • Sustainable Laboratories

The Sustainability Committee is a dynamic and newly established group, created with the hope of making our daily activities more sustainable. Every ICMAB staff member is invited to participate in its activities or actively contribute to the different working groups.

Since the committee has been active, various outreach initiatives have been carried out to raise awareness about water usage, improve sustainability in laboratories, encourage car sharing and public transportation and promote recycling.

Regarding the use of public and sustainable transportation, a presentation day for the UAB Campus Mobility Plan was organized, along with a celebration of World Bicycle Day.

During this event, several participants guided and demonstrated the best routes to reach the center by bike.

Additionally, a visit was arranged to an urban waste management facility to showcase how urban waste is processed.

The Sustainability Committee is a dynamic and newly established initiative, created with the hope of making our daily activities more sustainable. Every ICMAB staff member is invited to participate in its activities or contribute actively to the various working groups. Sustainability Plan at ICMAB

With the goal of implementing the strategic plan for sustainability at ICMAB, approved in May 2024, the institute has outlined three main areas of action with specific initiatives to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible resource use.

1. General Objectives

  • Assess and monitor the environmental impact of the institute and benchmark it against similar institutions.
  • Raise awareness about resource consumption among staff and researchers.
  • Communicate best practices for reducing energy, water, and material usage.
  • Share actions and improvements with the broader community to promote sustainability efforts.

2. Sustainability Within ICMAB

  • Minimize water consumption across laboratories and facilities.
  • Optimize energy use, including laboratory equipment and computational resources.
  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle general materials to minimize waste.
  • Adopt eco-friendly chemicals and greener synthesis routes whenever possible.

3. External Initiatives

  • Lower the environmental impact of commuting and work-related travel.
  • Promote sustainable purchasing and reduce the carbon footprint of procurement activities.
  • Communicate ICMAB’s research on sustainable materials to a broader audience.
  • Engage in local sustainability initiatives to contribute to a greener scientific ecosystem.

Through these efforts, ICMAB aims to lead by example, integrating sustainability into its scientific and operational practices while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
