PhD Theses

Congratulations to Dr. Maria Serena Maglione, new ICMAB graduate!

The PhD Researcher Maria Serena Maglione from the NANOMOL group defended her PhD thesis on "Preparation of electroactive self-assembled monolayers for the fabrication of advanced electronic devices" on Friday, 27 April. Her friends and family joined her during the defense of her thesis, which was evaluated by Fabio Biscarini (Universitá di Modena e Reggio Emilia), Arántzazu González (ICMAB) and Emilio Pérez (IMDEA Nanociencia). The thesis supervisors were Marta Mas-Torrent and Concepció Rovira

After the thesis, the ICMAB choir sang the traditional "Gaudeamus igitur", and her group colleagues offered her a video from all her labmates during the thesis and some presents. Following this, we could all enjoy some Italian food that her family and friends had prepared.

Abstract: This Thesis concerns the study of the switchable behavior on surface of specifically designed electroactive molecules by fabricating self-assembled monolayers (SAMs).
Subsequently to the study on surface, the molecules were integrated into various devices in order to investigate the effects of the electroactive switch in sophisticated systems.
Four family of electroactive molecules were employed, namely antraquinones (AQ), ferrocenes (Fc), tetrathiafulvalenes (TTF) and polyclorotriphenylmethy (PTM) derivatives. The investigation of the switching properties on surface was carried out by using as read-out mechanism the optical, magnetic, the capacitance response and the host-guest interactions with β-cyclodextrins.
Systems with multiple accessible states and with confined properties were realized.Furthermore, SAMs of AQ on ITO were used to realize water actuators, while SAMs of Fc, TTF and PTM derivatives were integrated in Field Effect Transistors, opening new perspectives for the molecule-based technologies.
