FOTICMAB 2023: our photo contest has amazing new winners


We would like to thank the almost 80 participating pictures. It has been a very interesting edition with amazing photos, some of them spectacular.
The winners of each category receive one of the new official ICMAB Limitted Special Edition T-shirts!
The FOTICMAB 2023 has received the participation of 30 pictures in the ARTISTIC category, 21 pictures in the SCIENCE category, 26 pictures in the FAUNA AND FLORA category!

There is one winner in each category, and two finalists. And they are…
Scientific category
First prize: 'Ready for surgery'
By Dean Kos, from the e-MolMat group. Dean Kos is a postdoctoral MSCA fellow working in the group of Marta Mas-Torrent, where he works wiht organic transisotrs. In fact, the picture is a "a sample with organic semiconductor transistors about to be tested in a probe station".
First finalist: 'New theory in the making'
Another picture from Dean Kos. This photo represents "A desk of a theoritician at ICMAB".Do you think it is real? Could be! We should ask Dean who's desk it is.
Second finalist: 'Do you see?'
By Esther Barrena, ICMAB researcher at the SURFACES group. The photo is made at ALBA Synchrotron, in the middle of an experiment. We can see in the picture Carmen Ocal, ICMAB researcher working at the same group as Esther Barrena. They both work on the preparartion and characterization or surfaces and interfaces. The picture has a "comic" feeling, it makes you smile, doesn't it?
Artistic category
First prize: 'Mar en calma'
By Bernat Bozzo, Senior Technician at the Low Temperatures and Magnetometry Lab. Bernat Bozzo is an active participant of the FOTICMAB contest, and each year he receives some prizes. He also belongs to a photography association in his hometown, Manresa.
The photo represents "Tarda de desembre a la Cala dels Frares de Lloret de Mar, just abans de pondre's el sol", he says ("December afternoon at the Cala dels Frares bay in Lloret de Mar, minutes before sunset")
First finalist: 'Flying to the moon'
By Allan Lancézeux, Master's student at UPC (Barcelona) and EEIGM (Nancy, France) studying Material Sciences. He is at ICMAB doing his master's thesis on the functionalization of bacterial cellulose with chitosan and nanoparticles for biomedical applications in the NN group.
"The harmony between the celestial and the human-made, or the perfect representation of our relentless pursuit to conquer new frontiers and push the boundaries of what is possible" he says.
Second finalist: 'Roots'
By Dean Kos, postdoctoral MSCA fellow at the eMolMat group in the OPTOCHARGE project, on "Optical probing of charge traps in organic field-effect transistors".
In this photo, he shows "Strong, dense, moss covered roots".
Fauna & Flora category
The two finalists and the first prize are for the same person: Dean Kos, postdoctoral MSCA fellow at the eMolMat group. Dean Kos enjoys photographing animals, plants, landscapes... when he travels around the world. The photos of these animals are amazing, take a look at them!
First prize: 'Scratch the itch'
“A pelican giving himself a scratch. When you've go no hands, a beak has to do!"
First finalist: 'Who left the lab in a mess?'
An intimidating look, like the one your supervisor, lab manager or boss may give you when you did something wrong.
Second finalist: 'Happy together'
“Sitting on a branch and relaxing with your colourful friends. What more could you ask for?". Really, an amazing colourful picture.
