ICMAB has been recognized with many successes during these last years, including the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence recognition and 9 ERC Projects awarded to its researchers. Another indicator of its impact is how its research outputs compare to other research institutes in the world. This can be done through the Nature Index database, which tracks the author affiliations collected fom high quality scientific articles published in 68 high-quality science journals independently selected by a panel of active scientists.
In the recently updated Nature Index, based on published research articles from 1 February 2016 to 31 January 2017, ICMAB occupies the first position within the CSIC centers. The second position among the CSIC centers is for the ICMM (Institute of Materials Science in Madrid), highlighting the high-quality of Materials Science research in Spain.
We are happy to say that ICMAB is ranked in the top 4 research centers in Catalonia and Spain, only behind three other Catalan centers, also Centers of Excellence Severo Ochoa: the ICIQ (Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia), the ICFO (Institute of Photonic Sciences) and the ICN2 (Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology).
The Nature Index outputs are divided into Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Earth and Environment Sciences. The main contributions of ICMAB are in the Chemistry and Physical Sciences areas.
CSIC is ranked the first research institute in Spain, it is in the top 10 research institutes in Europe, and in the top 50 of the world. In Spain, it is followed by the BIST (Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology) the UAM (Autonomous University of Madrid), the UB (University of Barcelona), and the UPV (University of the Basque Country). The UAB (Autonomous University of Barcelona) occupies the 11th position in the ranking. Spain is in the top 10 countries in the global ranking.
Note: The Nature Index tracks the affiliations of high quality scientific articles published in 68 high-quality science journals independently selected by a panel of active scientists. Article output is counted in three ways: (1) Article count (AC) where a count of 1 is assigned to the institution (or country) if there is one affiliation to that institution (country). (2) Fractional count (FC), takes into account the percentage of authors from that institution (or country) and the number of affiliations. (3) Weighted fractional count (WFC) is a correction of the FC, in which the FC of articles from astronomy and astrophysics journals are multiplied by a factor of 0.2, because they are overrepresented compared to the other publications. The results here are reported considering the WFC. The ratio of AC to FC gives an indication of the degree to which an institution or country collaborates in its research. The higher the ratio, the higher the degree of external collaboration and dependency of external resources.
