Promoting visibility and Open Science

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has released the latest edition of its Google Scholar Ranking of Spanish Women Scientists, featuring nearly 10,000 researchers from over 450 institutions. The ranking, developed by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Institute of Public Goods and Policies (IPP-CSIC), highlights the contributions of women scientists working in Spain and abroad, as well as international researchers affiliated with Spanish institutions.

Understanding the h-index and its limitations

The h-index is a metric that depends on both the number of publications and the citations they receive, serving as an indicator of a researcher’s impact. However, it is also influenced by the length of a research career. Scientists who have been active for more years tend to have a higher h-index, as they have had more time to publish and accumulate citations. As a result, this metric often favors long-established careers and may not fully reflect the impact of early-career researchers or those in emerging fields.
