ICMAB showcases SUBLIMAT: A cutting-edge Vacuum Sublimation Device at Science4Industry 2025

We are present, through the SOMM Alliance (Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Units Alliance), at the Science4Industry fair in La Nave, Madrid.

The SOMM Alliance, which brings together the main Centers and Units of Scientific Excellence in Spain, has been on 29-30 January 2025 at Science4Industry 2025 to present a first catalog of prototypes and technological innovations developed by its partners.

Amongst them, one comes from ICMAB: a device for vacuum sublimation (SUBLIMAT), a patented prototype that allows depositing materials directly on specific surfaces, optimizing purification and recrystallization processes in areas such as Molecular Electronics and Biosensors, developed by the FunNanoSurf group and presented at Science4Industry by Corral Herranz, Project Manager of the group, and who has answered us the following questions:

What is SUBLIMAT?

SUBLIMAT is a lab-scale advanced sublimator for directly depositing organic molecules on any surface. This device provides an efficient methodology, using a newly developed sublimation methodology, for solvent-free direct deposition of molecules onto desired substrates/devices/circuits, minimising steps, time, energy cost and molecular consumption. Therefore, maximising molecular deposition & testing towards their use in sectors as organic electrochemical devices, coatings and chemical purification.

How will it impact organic electrochemical devices?

SUBLIMAT projects a profound change in creating, analysing, and applying new organic electrochemical devices, from combining and testing new materials to their applications. The project foresees its usefulness in creating wearable electronics, imperceptible electronics, and smart packaging, among others. It will definitely enhance the creation of new devices with flexibility and stretchability properties born from the molecule+substrate synergy.

Is it a very complex system?

SUBLIMAT is easy to use, no training is required, and is adaptable not only to all surface kinds, but also to established laboratory assembly. Finally, enabling direct surface functionalisation considerably reduces material waste and power consumption, adding value to the SUBLIMAT sublimation technology.
