Imaging through scattering media

Abstract
Most objects around us are opaque. Which is good, because otherwise we wouldn't be able to see them. But the perk of being visible comes with the disadvantage of occluding anything behind them. There are many possible ways to deal with this problem, first and foremost is the option of physically removing the opaque obstacle, thus gaining direct line of sight to what we actually want to see, but they all come with their own advantages and disadvantages. In particular, many well-established techniques require to strongly modify the sample, which is often undesirable.
In this talk I will discuss how "random" light scattering is not as random as it looks at first sight, and how this can be exploited to perform non-invasive imaging through strongly scattering media.
Short bio
Prof. Jacopo Bertolotti is an Associated Professor in Physics at the University of Exeter (UK). He got his degree in Physics and PhD from the University of Florence (IT) in 2004 and 2008 respectively, working in the group of Prof D. Wiersma. He then worked with Prof A. Mosk at the University of Twente (NL) and Prof S. Gigan at the Institut Langevin (FR) before moving to the University of Exeter in 2013, where he established his research group, working on light scattering and imaging in turbid media.
Prof Bertolotti was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Physics in 2015 and the Institute of Physics Moseley medal in 2016 for his work on imaging through scattering media.
