Abstract:
Understanding the cell-material interactions is crucial for the development of tissue engineering strategies, aiming to treat disease and replace missing or damaged organs and tissues. In this thesis, a nanoarchitectonic approach has been explored, involving molecular self-assembly, to process two different organic nanoparticles – protein nanoparticles and quatsomes – on surfaces to biofunctionalize substrates for cell culture experiments. These nanoparticles provided a nanotopography that modulated ligand distribution at the nanoscale, enhancing cell adhesion and guidance. The results presented in this thesis highlight the importance of the properties at the nanoscale of the environment surrounding cells. The developed platforms will be useful in future cell culture studies, both for fundamental studies and for clinical applications.
