"Mastering supramolecular interactions to free electrons and generate hybrid van der Waals heterostructures" by Emanuele Orgiu (Mon, 27 March 2023)

The Seminars and Training Committee kindly invites you to the following ICMAB Periodical Lecture on supramolecular interactions:

16 March 2023

Mastering supramolecular interactions to free electrons and generate hybrid van der Waals heterostructures

by Emanuele Orgiu, University of Quebec (UQ) – Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), Centre Énergie Matériaux et Télécommunications

Monday, 27 March 2023
12 PM
ICMAB - Sala d'Actes Carles Miravitlles and ONLINE. Register here to attend by Zoom.

In this seminar I will talk about the importance of controlling supramolecular interactions and mainly focus on two cases.

First, I will describe how a subtle change in chemical structure can give rise to a profoundly different delocalization of electrons in organic single crystals. To unravel the different electron-phonon behavior in such crystals as a function of the molecular structure, we employed a plethora of experimental and computational techniques to identify killer molecular displacements responsible for the electron localization.

As well, I will discuss the role of superimposed 2D molecular supramolecular lattices over Quantum Materials in generating novel hybrid van der Waals heterostructures. I will provide some examples on charge- and magneto-transport in such structures.

Emanuele Orgiu received his MSc and PhD degree both from the University of Cagliari (Italy) in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He was awarded a Fulbright (USA) in 2007, and he was a Marie-Curie fellow (Strasbourg, France) in 2009–2011. He became Assistant Professor in 2011 at the University of Strasbourg where he was awarded the MIT35 France in 2013. Since November 2016, he is an Associate Professor at Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique/University of Quebec in Montreal (Canada), where he leads the Laboratory of Molecular and Device Physics. His current research focuses on understanding novel electronic phenomena occurring in molecular solids and 2D Quantum materials.

Throughout his career, he published ca. 100 articles in international journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Chemistry, Nature Comm, Advanced Materials, JACS, ACS Nano, Applied Physics Letters and others etc; he mentored ~50 young researchers (undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral fellows) of which 5 are now university professors/group leaders and he raised > 6.5 M$ funding while working in Italy, US, France and Canada.
