MinerMat Digital 2021 is a series of talks and videos about different topics related to minerals, materials, environment and sustainable development.

The online event is organized by Expominer (Fira Barcelona), in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC), the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and Geosciences Barcelona (GEO3BCN-CSIC).

From 15 to 19 November, and within the Week of Science and Technology (Setmana de la Ciència) (organized by the FCRI in Catalunya, and by the CSIC), 15 talks and workshops about geology, mineralogy and sustainable development will be available online through the Youtube channel of IDAEA-CSIC and ICMAB-CSIC. Most of the talks are in Catalan or Spanish.

From ICMAB, we have participated in the realization of these three videos:

Per què és blava l'Aerinita i com se'n va descobrir l'estructura?

This video is a short interview to Jordi Rius, ICMAB researcher who resolved the structure of the mineral Aerinite, in 2004, after 128 years since itwas discovered. The video explains the story and the difficulties encountered, and the three basic steps that were needed, in the end, to find the crystalline structure of this mineral, used as a blue pigment in the Catalan Romanesque Art.

Video by Artur Martínez, Anna May, Anna Crespi, Roberta Ceravola and Judith Oró. Video in Catalan (subtitles in CAT/ESP/ENG).

Els principals pigments naturals usats en el romànic

For this video we counted with the collaboration of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and Mireia Mestre and Núria Oriols, from the Area of Restoration and Conservation of the museum. The video explains which were the minerals used to obtain the 4 main colors used in the Catalan Romanesque Art found in the Pyrenees: red, yellow, black and blue. Do you know what were the minerals they used to obtain these colors? Don't miss this video, then!

El Arte de Cristalizar

In this video, Nico Dix, ICMAB researcher, gives a talk on the art of crystallization. A surprising story about the enigmas and beauty of natural crystals, which will take us into the magical world of growing our own crystals with a simple method, ending with a brief journey into the fabulous science of crystallizing in the laboratory.

Talk by Nico Dix, ICMAB researcher at the Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites (NN) group at ICMAB. Video in Spanish.
