The EMERGING 2021 DOC-FAM School took place 28 June - 2 July 2021. The opening ceremony started on Monday with a speech by ICMAB Director Xavier Obradors and ended on Friday with the award ceremony for the best posters and the best talks given by the PhD researchers. In between, EMERGING 2021 offered 16 invited talks, 22 talks by the DOC-FAM fellows, a roundtable and a live poster session of the participants.
The invited talks included 16 researchers, both local and international, with researchers joining online from Italy, Portugal, France, Canada, and the United States. Their scientific lectures and technical talks covered a broad range of topics related to materials science, like energy harvesting, superconductivity, supramolecular chemistry, litography, biomedicine, characterization methods, and many more.
Some lectures also covered interdisciplinary topics, like the European Research Council (in a talk by Rodrigo Martins), the current state of research publications (by Stefano Ossicini), or the relationship between art and science (by Mónica Bello).
The roundtable about "Life after PhD" included Julio Ríos, Coordinator of Innovation and Technology Transfer management at the Hospital de Cádiz, Violeta Vázquez, R&D and Innovation Consultant at Zabala Innovation, Elena Galán García, Project Leader Material Development at Novaled, and Lorena Tomás, Manager of the Research Projects and Grants Department at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), four professionals who shared the ways in which their careers took shape after finishing their PhDs.

The poster session took place at ICMAB’s terrace, our first live event since the beginning of the pandemic. Definitely a breath of fresh air! The 13 posters, made by PhD fellows participating at the DOC-FAM school, were defended by its authors as there was a competition for the best poster, voted by the participants at the school and some of the organizers and speakers.

The ceremony ended with the announcement of the winners of the best DOC-FAM talks, which were also voted by the PhD reserachers themselves:
The Emerging DOC-FAM School (EMERGING2021) is coordinated by ICMAB in the context of the Doctoral Training Programme in Functional Advanced Materials (DOC-FAM) project (H2020-MSCA-COFUND-2016), which offers an excellence training programme in the bourgeoning field of Functional Advanced Materials through an interdisciplinary, intersectorial and international approach.
The programme is developed in coordination with the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute of the National Microelectronics Centre (IMB-CNM-CSIC) and ALBA Synchrotron (ALBA-CELLS), whose researchers collaborated on the EMERGING 2021 school with insightful lectures. This programme complements the FUNFUTURE programme, ICMAB’s second recognition as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence.
Thank you to all the organizers, collaboators, invited speakers and participants to make it possible!
