Abstract

Perovskite oxides offer a rich property portfolio such as ferro/piezo/pyroelectricity, making them very attractive materials for applications in the field of electronics, photonics and quantum devices. However, their integration in conventional semiconductor devices is challenging due to the different crystalline structure and lattice constants. Building on the knowledge obtained from 2D materials, the recent field of freestanding perovskite oxide membranes is fast advancing. Without contrictions coming from the growth substrate and with new degrees of freedom to explore, such as stacking and twisting, freestanding crystalline membranes can overcome all these limitations and have already demonstrated novel physical phenomena, such as moiré and correlated polar vortex patterns.

In this seminar we present our study on the far- and near-field spectroscopic characterisation of such membranes in the ultra-thin limit. Combining our experimental results with finite dipole model simulations and density functional theory calculations we discovered novel phase transition behaviours. Our results highlight the potential of nanoscale infrared characterisation and Raman spectroscopy for the characterisation of freestanding membranes to reveal hidden structure–property relationships, opening new perspectives on the control of functional properties in ultrathin systems. .

Short bio

Dr. Anna Katharina Ott obtained her M.Sc. in physics from the Freie Universität in Berlin. She then moved to the UK where she earned her PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2017. After her postdoc at the Cambridge Graphene Centre, where she also held a position as Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College Cambridge, she was appointed as lecturer in Quantum Engineering at the University of Exeter.

In 2021 she became a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. Since 2022 she is working in France where she has a position with the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Dr. Ott obtained her HDR (Habilitation à diriger des recherches) from the University of Strasbourg in 2024, and is now working at the GREMAN laboratory in Tours. Her research focuses on the investigation of quantum and nanoscale materials, particularly two-dimensional materials and perovskite oxide membranes, using advanced optical techniques.
