New book on advances in catalysis with Boron clusters

On the occasion of the 70th birthday and retirement of ICMAB researchers Francesc Teixidor and Clara Viñas, a special volume of the Advances in Catalysis book series book titled “Advances in the synthesis and catalytic applications of boron clusters: a tribute to the works of Professor Francesc Teixidor and Professor Clara Viñas” has been edited.

The editors of the Advances in Catalysis book are ICMAB researcher Rosario Núñez, and University Rovira i Virgili (URV) researcher Montserrat Diéguez, and includes chapters written by experts in the field, with the common aim to show the developed strategies and latest advances in the field of Boron chemistry.

"When putting together this special issue, we wanted to dedicate this volume to honor the research work of Professors Teixidor and Viñas as major contributors and internationally recognized experts in the field. We decided to do so by identifying fellow colleagues in the field we truly admire and simply ask them to share their chemistry" says Rosario Núñez, one of the editors of the book.

The six chapters of this special volume contain the following:

Chapter 1 is an own contribution on work led by F. Teixidor and C. Viñas, coordinated by R. Núñez with the participation of J. Giner Planas and I. Romero. This chapter provides the advances on the use of rhoda and ruthenacarboranes containing o-carborane-based ligands as efficient catalysts in diverse reactions such as hydrogenation, cyclopropanation or Kharasch addition. Besides, Pd complexes containing m-carborane ligands have shown to be good catalyst precursors in Suzuki coupling reactions in water. Furthermore, recent advances on the photocatalytic activity of metallacarboranes towards the oxidation of alcohols and alkenes under UV light in water has also been reported.

In Chapter 2, I. Sivaev and coworkers review the current state of functionalization of polyhedral boron hydrides to form B-N, B-P, B-O, and B-S bonds using transition metal-catalyzed BX and BH activation reactions.

In Chapter 3, Z. Xie and coworkers provide recent advances on the catalytic regio- and enantio-selective cage BH functionalization of o-carborane to provide new derivatives for applications in medicine, materials and coordination/organometallic chemistry.

In Chapter 4, Y. Zhu and coworkers get an overview of the contributions of boron-based compounds as catalysts, i.e. the application of boron-based compounds as Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) catalysts with the focus on heterogeneous catalysis to produce products ranging from good chemicals to selective pharmaceuticals.

In Chapter 5, H. Yan and coworkers collect the progress on carboranylation approaches in order to link organic fragments to specific vertices of closo- and nido-carboranes by functionalization via B–H bond activation, transformation of pre-functionalized carborane and functionalization on carbon vertex.

Finally, in Chapter 6, S. Duttwyler and coworkers provide advances on the derivatization of other types of anionic boron clusters as the monocarborane and the dodecaborate by controlled activation of B-H vertex.
