The newspaper El País reports the ICMAB project SynEry
This newspaper had the piece on the last 20 September, titled 'Stem cells and high technology: two Spanish labs face the challenge of creating artificial blood'.
In the recent article published in the newspaper El País, they explain two projects currently being developed in two different laboratories in regards of creating artificial blood.
One of them is the laboratory of the Banc de Sang i Teixits. Their project revolves around the production of red blood cells from stem cells. In the BST lab, they grow these stem cells into red blood cells, and these ‘precursor cell lines’ are a direct precursor to blood cells.
The second project they mention in the article is the ICMAB project SynEry. It is coordinated by KU Leuven University (Belgium), with the collaboration of ICMAB, the Center for Nanomedicine and Tissue Engineering (Italy) and the Integrated Biology of Red Blood Cell in Paris (France). In total, 20 researchers are working on this project. It began in April 2022, and so far, as Arantzazu González-Campo explains in the article, they are meeting the objectives set. Dr. González-Campo is the lead researcher of the Spanish branch of this project, and Permanent Scientific Researcher, together with Dr. Núria Aliaga, of the group FUNNANOSURF.
