The awardees with the Premis Ciutat de Barcelona 2017 have been known on February 1, 2018. The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, February 15, at the Saló de Cent, in a ceremony presided by Ada Colau, and conducted by the journalist Eva Arderius. Prof. Xavier Obradors, ICMAB Director, was member of the jury in the category "Experimental Sciences and Technology".
The jury was formed by Maria Garcia-Parajo (President), Carme Rovira, Ramon López de Mantaras, Josep Maria Martorell and Xavier Obradors. Finally, the prize has been awarded to Hugues de Riedmatten, ICREA Professor at ICFO (Institute of Photonic Sciences) for his work on "Photonic quantum state transfer between a cold atomic gas and a Crystal" published in Nature. He has shown for the first time that it is possible to transmit a quantum bit through a single photon between two nodes of different physical nature. This opens the doors to a safer telecommunications network, compatible with the current fiber optic infrastructure.
Prof. Teresa Puig and Prof. Xavier Obradors were awarded with the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2015 in this same category for their "discovery of a low-cost and scalable method for the prodcution of superconducting materials, based on the ultrafast crystallization, and applicable to the sustainable management of electric energy".
The other awards Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2017 have been for:
