Summary
"The True Cost" (2015) and "Dead White Man’s Clothes" (2021) are two documentaries that reveal the full life cycle of the clothes most of us wear, of which we usually see only a small part. The labor exploitation involved in their manufacture, the low-quality materials used, and the enormous containers of discarded clothing that end up in Africa are all part of the hidden story behind the clothes we wear. Intertwined with these processes is the concept of Fast Fashion: a model of clothing production and consumption based on large volumes, low costs, and huge environmental impacts. Fashion seasons, trends, and marketing strategies are all designed to keep us constantly buying new clothes.
But what exactly is fast fashion? If you shop at Shein or Inditex, are you part of it? Is there any way to step outside these systems?
