25N: Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Today, November 25th, in commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe, respectful, and equitable environment for everyone, everyday.

Below, we share the statement prepared by the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee that speaks for all the ICMAB staff:

November 25th
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Statement

Gender-based violence is a profound scourge that affects our society on a global scale. Today, we remind ourselves that this issue not only impacts those directly affected but also influences us all as a community.

Gender-based violence does not follow a single pattern; there is no fixed image of a "victim" or "perpetrator." Anyone can experience or perpetrate it. Therefore, it is everyone's responsibility to work toward raising awareness and eradicating this form of violence.

It is essential that we become aware and foster understanding within our surroundings:

  • Because there may be invisible victims around us who need our support.
  • Because even if we think we are not affected, it might already be impacting us without us noticing.
  • Because educating our children is key to addressing this problem entirely.

Murders, rapes, sexual abuse, and threats against women are only the tip of the iceberg. Beneath this visible horror lies hidden violence: disdain, humiliation, devaluation, sexist humor and advertising, microaggressions, and more. These subtle forms of violence often go unnoticed but are equally devastating.

We cannot allow these forms of violence to persist. As a society, we have a duty to be aware, to make them visible, and to put an end to them.

From the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee, we call for reflection and action in the fight for a society free from gender-based violence.

Let us take this opportunity to remind everyone that CSIC and ICMAB have zero tolerance for any conduct that may constitute harassment of any kind. Together, we must raise awareness and remain vigilant to detect, report, and eliminate such behaviors.
